Schiefermesser mit zwei eingravierten Schweinswalen — Das Foto zeigt einen etwa sichelförmigen flachen Stein vor olivfarbenem Hintergrund. Auf seiner rötlich-braunen Oberfläche sind helle Einkerbungen sichtbar. Der bearbeitete Stein hat eine raue Oberfläche, seine Kanten weisten Kerben und Absplitterungen auf. Griff und Klinge des etwa 15 Zentimeter langen Messers sind nicht eindeutig voneinander zu trennen. Sein linkes Ende bildet ein 90°C-Winkel. Nach unten verläuft der Umriss weiter in einer Halbkreisform, die nach rechts in den Griff übergeht. Die obere Kante des Messers mit der Schneide, verläuft relativ gerade, bis auch sie im Griff endet. Sein Ende ist abgerundet und weist kleine Unebenheiten auf. Die hellen feinen Linien der Einkerbungen bedecken den Teil des Gesteins, der als Klinge fungiert hat. Mit wenigen Kerben sind zwei Wale angedeutet. Ein Walkörper bedeckdie komplette Fläche der Klinge. Sein Umriss entspricht nahezu dem Umriss des Messers. Von links zieht sich ein gerader Strich in die Körpermitte. Von ihm zweigen oben und unten kurze schräge Linien ab, die für Gräten stehen könnten. Der Strich, der für die Speiseröhre stehen mag, endet in einer Rautenform. Der Körper des anderen Wals ist nur teilweise im linken oberen Abschnitt erkennbar. Solche Messer aus Schiefer oder Sandstein wurden zwischen 5.000 und 3.000 vor Christus von norwegischen Jägerfischern verwendet. ——— Slate Knife with Two Engraved Porpoises — The photo shows a flat and roughly crescent-shaped stone in front of an olive-coloured background. Light indentations are visible on its reddish-brown surface. The worked stone has a rough surface, its edges have notches and chippings. The handle and blade of the knife, which is about 15 centimetres long, cannot be clearly distinguished from one another. Its left end forms a 90-degree angle. Towards the bottom, the outline continues in a semicircular shape that merges into the handle on the right. The upper edge of the knife with the cutting edge runs relatively straight until it ends in the handle. Its end is rounded and has small bumps. The light fine lines of the notches cover the part of the rock that has functioned as the blade. Two whales are indicated by a few notches. A whale’s body covers the entire surface of the blade. Its outline almost corresponds to the outline of the knife. A straight line runs from the left to the centre of the body. Short slanting lines branch off from it at the top and bottom, which could represent fish bones. The line, which may represent the oesophagus, ends in a diamond shape. The body of the other whale is only partially visible in the upper left section. Such knives, made of slate or sandstone, were used by Norwegian hunter-fishermen between 5,000 and 3,000 BC.

This single-edged knife of reddish-brown slate, or sandstone bears three engravings of fish or porpoises, two on one side (shown here) and one on the back. All three display the same internal patterning, a line running from the mouth to a square geometrical figure inside the body. The line is crossed by a series of smaller lines at an oblique angle to the main line. Although this is not an anatomically correct representation of neither a fish nor a porpoise, it can perhaps be interpreted as the representation of the animal’s oesophagus leading to its stomach, while the oblique lines may indicate fishbones or ribs. The total length of both blade and handle is 15.5 cm.
