Guido da Vigevano’s Anatomie, Abbildung 8 Die Seite aus einem Buch zeigt die Illustration eines menschlichen Körpers. In der linken oberen Ecke ist sie mit einem kurzen lateinischen Text versehen. Die Seite ist Bestandteil einer Serie von insgesamt 17 Abbildungen, die die Anatomie des Menschen zeigen. Die Zeichnung ist in schwarz-weiß ausgeführt. Der Umriss des Körpers tritt als markante schwarze Linie hervor. Knochen und Gelenke sind in Grautönen dargestellt, die inneren Organe bleiben weiß. Die Arme und Beine erscheinen sehr dünn, Muskeln oder Sehnen sind nicht abgebildet. Erkennbar sind die Gelenke der Hände, des Ellenbogens, der Schultern, der Hüfte, der Knie und der Füße sowie die Schlüsselbeine. Finger und Zehen wurden lediglich angedeutet. Auf dem Hals sitzt der Kopf mit einem ausgearbeiteten Gesicht, Ohren und kurzen gelockten Haaren. Das Gesicht ist rund, die Augen sind geschlossen, die Mundwinkel weisen nach unten. In der Bauchhöhle sind die Umrisse der Verdauungsorgane hervorgehoben. Die Flächen neben den Organen sind grau und dunkelgrau schraffiert. Wie ein breites helles Band zieht sich das Zwerchfell über die Brusthöhle. Von oben führt die Speiseröhre wie ein dünner Schlauch nahezu gerade vom Hals abwärts in den zwiebelförmig dargestellten Magen. Dabei durchstößt sie das Zwerchfell. Der Darm, der in Schlingen die untere Fläche der Bauchhöhle füllt, beginnt rechts neben dem Magen. Der Text in lateinischer Sprache beginnt auf Kopfhöhe der Zeichnung und zieht sich in kurzen Zeilen bis auf Höhe des Oberarms der Illustration. Er ist in kräftigen verschnörkelten Buchstaben geschrieben. — — Guido da Vigevano's Anatomy, Figure 8 This page from a book shows an illustration of a human body. It is accompanied by a short Latin text in the upper left corner. The page is part of a series of 17 illustrations altogether demonstrating human anatomy. The drawing is executed in black and white. The outline of the body stands out because of its prominent bold black line. The bones and joints are depicted in shades of grey, the internal organs remain white. The arms and legs appear very thin. Muscles or tendons are not depicted. The joints of the hands, elbow, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet, as well as the collarbones, are recognisable. Fingers and toes have only been indicated. On top of the neck, is the head with a detailed face, ears, and short curly hair. The face is round, the eyes are closed, and the corners of the mouth point downwards. In the abdominal cavity, the outlines of the digestive organs are bolded and emphasised. The areas next to the organs are hatched in grey and dark grey. The diaphragm stretches across the thoracic cavity like a wide light band. From above, the oesophagus runs like a thin tube almost straight down from the neck into the onion-shaped stomach. In doing so, it pierces the diaphragm. The intestine, which fills the lower surface of the abdominal cavity in loops, begins to the right of the stomach. The Latin text in the upper left corner begins at the level of the figure’s head and continues in short lines up to the level of the figure’s upper arm. It is written in bold squiggly letters.

Von Euphronios signierter athenischer Krater mit roten Figuren Das Terrakottagefäß mit Henkeln stammt aus einem etruskischen Grab des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Der Ausschnitt zeigt eine Szene aus Homers Ilias, in der Zeus‘ Sohn Sarpedon von Patroklos getötet wurde. Ein Krater ist ein griechisches Weinmischgefäß in Form eines Topfes, der sich nach oben hin verbreitert. Der obere und untere Rand des hier gezeigten Kraters ist mit einem orangefarbenen Schnörkelmuster verziert. Auch die Figuren darauf sind in Orange gehalten. Sie heben sich deutlich vom schwarzen Untergrund ab. In der Mitte der Szene ist Sarpedon auf der Seite liegend erkennbar. Sein Körper nimmt etwa die untere Hälfte der Darstellung ein. Seine Beine sind leicht angewinkelt, der rechte Arm liegt vor dem Körper. Die in Braun aufgemalten welligen Haare fallen ihm auf die Schultern. Der athletische Körper ist unbekleidet. Dünne rote Linien verlaufen vom Herzbereich schräg nach links unten, ebenso von Bauch und rechtem Oberschenkel. Sarpedon wird an Knien und Schultern von zwei menschlichen Gestalten mit Adlerflügeln und Adlerköpfen gehalten. Sie tragen kurze Tuniken. Die schwarzen Vollbärte stehen waagerecht vom Kinn ab. Die Gestalten sind die Personifizierungen von Schlaf und Tod. Mittig hinter Sarpedon steht eine weitere Figur aufrecht nach links gewandt.Es ist Hermes. Seine rechte Hand ist erhoben, in der linken hält er den Stab. Auf dem Kopf sitzt der geflügelte Helm. Darunter quellen gewellte schwarze Haare hervor, die ihm bis auf die Schultern fallen. Er trägt einen Umhang über einem tunikaartigen Untergewand. Links und rechts wird die Szene von je einem Soldaten mit Speer und Schild eingerahmt. Diese Figuren sind in dem dargestellten Ausschnitt nur teilweise erkennbar. Dieser Krater von Euphronios hat ein Fassungsvermögen von 45 Litern. Euphronios war einer der bedeutendsten griechischen Vasenmaler des rotfigurigen Stils. Das Gefäß wird im Museo Nazionale Archeologico Cerite in der Nähe von Rom aufbewahrt. — — Athenian Krater Signed by Euphronios with Red Figures The photo shows a section of a terracotta vessel with handles. It comes from an Etruscan tomb of the 6th century BC. This section depicts a scene from Homer's Iliad in which Zeus' son, Sarpedon, was killed by Patroklos. A krater is a Greek wine-mixing vessel in the shape of a pot that widens towards the top. The upper and lower rims of the krater shown here are decorated with an orange scroll pattern. The figures on it are also in orange and clearly stand out against the black background. In the middle of the scene, Sarpedon can be seen lying on his side. His body takes up about the lower half of the depiction. His legs are slightly bent, and his right arm is in front of his body. The wavy hair, painted in brown, falls to his shoulders. His athletic body is unclothed. Thin red lines run diagonally from the heart area down to the left, as well as from the abdomen and right thigh. Sarpedon is held at the knees and shoulders by two human figures with eagle wings and eagle heads. They are wearing short tunics. Their full black beards stand out horizontally from the chin. They are the personifications of sleep and death. In the centre behind Sarpedon stands another figure standing upright and facing to the left. It is Hermes. His right hand is raised, and on his left, he holds a staff. A winged helmet sits on his head. Wavy black hair spills out from under it, falling to his shoulders. He wears a cloak over a tunic-like undergarment. On either side, the scene is framed by a soldier with a spear and shield. These figures are only partially visible in the photo shown. This krater signed by Euphronios has a capacity of 45 litres. Euphronios was one of the most important Greek vase painters of the red-figure style. This krater is located in the Cerite National Archeological Museum near Rome.

A polyvisceral plaque

Eine weibliche Figur mit offenem Torso Die bräunlich-graue Statue ohne Kopf wurde 1885 in Mittelitalien, südöstlich von Rom ausgegraben. Sie stammt aus der Zeit zwischen dem 4. und 2. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Die Figur aus Terrakotta ist 26,5 Zentimeter hoch. Neben dem Kopf fehlen die linke Schulter und die Füße. Trotz des Verlustes dieser Körperteile lässt sich eine aufrechte Haltung erkennen. Die Frauengestalt scheint auf ihrem rechten Bein zu stehen, das linke ist etwas angewinkelt. Der rechte Arm hängt am Körper herab, vom linken ist der Unterarm erhalten, der in die Hüfte gestützt ist. Der Torso ist in ein fließendes knöchellanges Gewand gehüllt. An der Schulter, um die Hüften und zum Knöchel hin ist es üppig gefaltet. Der rechte Arm ist bis zum Ellenbogen bedeckt. Ein vertikal verlaufender ovaler Ausschnitt zieht sich vom Brustbein bis zur Scham. Darin sind die inneren Organe sichtbar. Ein senkrecht stehender Quader unterhalb des Brustbeins bezeichnet das Herz. Ein würfelförmiges Gebilde darunter stellt den Magen dar. An der breitesten Stelle, in der Mitte des Ausschnitts, befindet sich der waagerecht verlaufende Darm. Seine senkrecht angeordneten Schlingen füllen das gesamte Zentrum aus. Unterhalb des Darms liegen weitere Organe wie die Nieren. Die Statue war vermutlich eine Opfergabe, verbunden mit der Heilung erkrankter Organe oder stand im Zusammenhang mit dem Wunsch nach Fruchtbarkeit. — — A Female Figure with an Open Torso This brownish-grey statue without a head was excavated in 1885 in central Italy, southeast of Rome. It dates from the period between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. The terracotta figure is 26.5 centimetres high. Besides the head, the left shoulder and the feet are also missing. Despite the loss of these body parts, an upright posture can be discerned. The female figure appears to be standing on her right leg and the left leg is slightly bent. The right arm hangs down the body, and the forearm of the left arm is preserved, supported on the hip. The torso is wrapped in a flowing ankle-length robe. It is luxuriantly folded at the shoulder, around the hips and towards the ankle. The right arm is covered up to the elbow. There is a vertical oval-shaped cutout that runs from the breastbone to the pubic region. The internal organs are visible within it. There is a vertically upright cuboid below the sternum indicating the heart. A cube-shaped structure below it indicates the stomach. There is a horizontally running intestine in the middle of the cutout at its widest point. Its vertically arranged loops fill the entire centre. Below the intestine are other organs such as the kidneys. It is probable that the statue was a votive offering associated with the healing of diseased organs or was related to the desire for fertility.

Erkrankungen des Magens (Krebs) Auf der Seite aus Cruveilhiers Anatomie sind unter der Überschrift „Die Krankheiten des Körpers“ zwei farbige Abbildungen des Magens platziert. Sie stellen ein gesundes und ein erkranktes Organ dar. In der oberen Hälfte des Blattes wird ein Magen im Querschnitt gezeigt. Er ist in Form eines liegenden Ovals mit Einbuchtungen und Auswölbungen an den Rändern dargestellt. Die Ränder sind beige. Oben ist der Ansatz der Speiseröhre sichtbar, unten links der des Darms. Das Innere des Magens ist zu zwei Dritteln in Grau dargestellt, das obere Drittel in Beige. Die zweite Abbildung unten auf der Seite zeigt den Magen im Querschnitt mit den Ansätzen von Speiseröhre und Darm wie oben beschrieben. Rechts daneben ist ein Organ in braun abgebildet. Es hat eine ebenfalls ovale Form, in der ein keilförmiger Ausschnitt erkennbar ist. Darin befindet sich ein schwarzer Fleck mit gezackten Rändern. Das Innere des Magens ist in dieser Darstellung in verschiedenfarbige Bereiche unterteilt. In der Mitte liegt eine ockerfarbene nahezu kreisförmige Fläche mit einem schwarzen Umriss. Sie füllt fast den gesamten Innenraum aus. Die wulstige Fläche rechts daneben ist in Rottönen dargestellt, eine dunkelrote trichterförmige Fläche markiert den Übergang zum ockerfarbenen Darm. John Baptiste Cruveilhier war ein französischer Arzt, Anatom und Pathologe, der im 19. Jahrhundert in Limoges, Nordwestfrankreich, praktizierte. Seine Erkenntnisse schrieb er unter anderem in seiner Anatomie Pathologique nieder und schuf damit ein fundamentales Werk. — — Diseases of the Stomach (Cancer) On the page from Cruveilhier's Anatomy, two coloured illustrations of the stomach are placed under the heading “The Diseases of the Body.” Two organs are depicted, one healthy and one diseased. In the upper half of the page, a stomach is shown in cross-section. It is depicted in the form of a reclining oval with indentations and bulges at the edges. The edges are beige. At the top, the base of the oesophagus is visible, and that of the intestine is at the bottom left. Two-thirds of the inside of the stomach is shown in grey, and the upper third in beige. The second illustration at the bottom of the page shows the stomach in cross-section with the attachments of the oesophagus and intestine as previously described. To the right, an organ is shown in brown. It also has an oval shape in which a wedge-shaped cutout can be seen. Within it is a black spot with jagged edges. In this illustration, the inside of the stomach is divided into different coloured areas. In the middle is an ochre-coloured almost circular area with a black outline. It fills almost the entire interior. The bulging area to the right is depicted in shades of red, and a dark red funnel-shaped area marks the transition to the ochre-coloured intestine. John Baptiste Cruveilhier was a French physician, anatomist and pathologist who practised in Limoges, northwestern France, during the 19th century. Among other things, he wrote down his findings in his "Anatomie Pathologique" and thus created a fundamental work.

Diseases of the Stomach (cancer)
