John Sloan, Ein Selbstportrait des Künstlers mit einem Bariumbecher in der Hand, der sich unter der Aufsicht von zwei Radiologen einer Durchleuchtung des oberen Magen-Darm-Trakts unterzieht — Bei diesem hochformatigen Druck in Grautönen aus dem Jahr 1926 handelt es sich um ein mit Radierung und Aquatinta geschaffenes Selbstporträt. Im Zentrum der Druckgrafik befindet sich der rechteckige Leuchtschirm. Vor einem weißen Hintergrund zeichnen sich darauf in Grau Rippen, der sackförmige Magen und daran anschließende Darmschlingen ab. Hinter dem Schirm steht ein schlanker Mann in Pullunder und Hemd. Sein längliches Gesicht mit dem markanten Kinn erscheint in einem helleren Grau als der Körper und die etwas vom Kopf abstehenden kurzen Haare. Der Mann trägt eine runde Brille. In seiner rechten Hand hält er ein durchsichtiges, zylindrisches Gefäß, das zu einem Drittel mit einer Flüssigkeit (Barium) gefüllt ist, die ebenso hell strahlt wie der Leuchtschirm. Der Mann steht zwischen dem Leuchtschirm und der türgroßen rechteckigen Platte. Sie erscheint nahezu schwarz und ist stark schraffiert. An der Wand, links neben dem Mann, hängen zwei gerahmte Urkunden. Aus der dunklen Platte ragt eine Stange heraus. An ihr ist im rechten Winkel an einem kurzen Arm, der Leuchtschirm befestigt. Am Kopf der Stange befindet sich ein Rad. Vor dem Leuchtschirm sitzen zwei Männer. Beide tragen Kittel, Schutzbrillen und helle Handschuhe. Der Mann links hat zurückgekämmtes dunkles Haar. Sein Blick ist auf den Schirm gerichtet. Mit der rechten Hand deutet er darauf, mit der linken umfasst er das Rad. Der Mann rechts hat Geheimratsecken und ebenfalls zurückgekämmtes dunkles Haar. Mit erhobenem linkem Zeigefinger sieht er zu seinem Kollegen. Die Partien der Kittel, die vom Leuchtschirm beschienen werden, strahlen weiß. Die Rückenpartien und die den Betrachtenden zugewandten Gesichtspartien der Männer sind in dunklen Grauabstufungen ausgeführt und stark schraffiert. Die Grauabstufungen lassen sich mit dem Aquatinta- Verfahren erzeugen, die Schraffuren mit der Radierung. —— John Sloan, A self-portrait of the artist holding a cup of barium and undergoing an upper gastrointestinal fluoroscopic study under the care of two radiologists — This portrait format print in shades of grey from 1926 is a self-portrait created with etching and aquatint. In the centre of the print is the rectangular illuminated screen. Against a white background, ribs, a sack-shaped stomach and adjoining intestinal loops stand out in grey. Behind the illuminated screen stands a slim man in a sweater and shirt. His elongated face with the prominent chin appears in a lighter grey than his body and short hair sticks out a little from his head. The man wears oval glasses. In his right hand, he holds a transparent cylindrical vessel, one-third of which is filled with a liquid (barium) that shines as brightly as the illuminated screen. The man stands between the illuminated screen and a door-sized rectangular plate. It appears almost black and is heavily hatched. On the wall, to the left of the man, are two framed documents. A pole protrudes from the dark panel. A lampshade is attached to it at a right angle on a short arm. At the head of the pole is a wheel. Two men are sitting in front of the illuminated screen. Both are wearing smocks, protective goggles, and light-coloured gloves. The man on the left has dark hair combed back. His gaze is directed at the screen. He points to it with his right hand and grips the wheel with his left. The man on the right also has dark hair combed back. With his left index finger raised, he looks at his colleague. Some parts of their gowns that are illuminated by the fluorescent screen shine white. Some other parts of the men's backs and faces, facing away from the fluorescent screen, are in dark shades of grey and are heavily hatched. The shades of grey are created using an aquatint technique and the hatching with an etching technique.

Verstrickungen mit Torshi Nr. 2 — Das quadratische Gemälde zeigt vier hockende Frauen, die nur mit einem Slip bekleidet sind. Verbunden sind sie durch rosafarbene schlauchartige Gebilde. Das bild ist mit Öl und Torshi auf Leinen gemalt. „Torshi“ wird mit dem Saft von hausgemachten Torshi-Gurken hergestellt, die rosa-mauve Farbe für die Bemalung verwendet wird. Körperform, Hautton und Kleidung sind bei allen Frauenfiguren relativ identisch. Sie haben kräftige Oberschenkel, schmale Taillen, schlanke Arme und kleine Brüste. Die Haut aller Frauen ist hell creme-braun. Die Slips sind blau, weiße Linien bilden ein Rautenmuster darauf. Auch die Gesichter mit den breiten Augenbrauen, geraden Nasen und kleinen Mündern ähneln sich. Sie wirken maskenhaft. Rosa Schlauchgebilde ersetzen die Haare und teilweise die Köpfe. Die vier Frauenfiguren nehmen jede eine identische Fläche auf dem cremefarbenen Untergrund ein. Drei sind in Ecken platziert, die Frau links unten ist ein Stück weit in die Bildmitte gerückt. Sie hat dem Betrachtenden den Rücken zugekehrt, ihre Beine sind gespreizt. In beiden Händen hält sie zwei Stränge des schlauchartigen Gebildes an ihrem Hinterkopf. Die Frauen in der oberen Bildhälfte sind dem Betrachtenden zugewandt, auch ihre Beine sind gespreizt. Die Frau links sieht geradeaus. Sie hält einen Schlauch an ihrem Kopf fest und einen anderen vor sich. Die Frau rechts hält den Blick gesenkt. Die rosa Schlingen auf ihrem Kopf scheinen ihn niederzudrücken. In ihren Händen hält sie einen weiteren Schlauch der in Schlingen und Schlaufen zu dem Kopf der Frau in der rechten unteren Bildecke führt. Hockend hat sie Kopf und Schulter zwischen die Beine geklemmt. Aus ihren Händen läuft der Schlauch zum unteren Bildrand und aus dem Bild. ——Entanglements with Torshi No. 2 — The square painting shows four squatting women dressed only in panties. They are connected by pink tubular formations. The painting is done with oil and torshi on linen. “Torshi” is made with the juice of homemade torshi pickles, wherein the pink-mauve colour is used in the painting. The body shape, skin tone and clothing are relatively identical in all the female figures. They have strong thighs, narrow waists, slender arms and small breasts. All the women have light cream-brown skin. The panties are blue and white lines form a diamond pattern on them. Their faces all similarly have broad eyebrows, straight noses and small mouths. They look mask-like. Pink tube formations replace their hair and, partly, their heads. The four female figures each occupy an identical-sized area on the cream-coloured background. Three are placed in corners, and the woman at the bottom left has moved a little way into the centre of the picture. She has her back turned to the viewer and her legs are spread. In both hands, she holds two strands of the tube-like structure at the back of her head. The women in the upper half of the picture are facing the viewer, their legs are also spread. The woman on the left is looking straight ahead. She is holding one tube against her head and another in front of her. The woman on the right keeps her gaze lowered. The pink loops on her head seem to weigh her down. In her hands, she holds another hose that leads in loops and loops to the head of the woman in the lower right corner of the picture. Squatting, she has her head and shoulder clamped between her legs. From her hands the hose runs to the lower edge of the picture and out of frame.

Es ist mit Öl auf Leinen gemalt. Der Frauenkopf befindet sich in der linken unteren Bildhälfte. Er ist nahezu in die Waagrechte gekippt und leicht zur Seite gedreht. Das faltenlose neutral-beigefarbenes Gesicht hat eine ovale Form. Die Haare sind in der Mitte gescheitelt und haubenartig nach hinten frisiert. Unter kräftigen schwarzen Brauen leuchten weiße Augäpfel ohne Pupillen. Die Augenlider haben keine Wimpern. Unterhalb einer geraden Nase liegt der kleine Mund mit einer roten Oberlippe und einer blaßroten Unterlippe. Eine scharfe gezackte Kante in Braun und creme verläuft vom Kinn bis zum Nacken. Aus dem hohl erscheinenden Halsansatz treten seitlich zwei schwarze Schläuche mit Ausstülpungen hervor. Sie winden sich umeinander und führen zur rechten oberen Bildecke. Von dort kommt ein dritter Schlauch, der die anderen beiden je zweimal umschlingt, bevor er rechts oben wieder verschwindet. Der Bildhintergrund ist zweigeteilt. Die oberen zwei Drittel sind cremefarben, im unteren Drittel dominieren Rottöne. Die Farbflächen sind sehr klar voneinander abgegrenzt. Die rot dominierte Farbfläche ist in Felder geteilt, von denen einige lang und schmal, andere nahezu quadratisch sind. Alle Felder sind mit Ornamenten ausgefüllt; die meisten in Weiß, einige in Blau. —— Neurobust No. 5 — This square painting depicts a woman's head, from the underside of which black tube-like formations emerge, forming the centre of the painting. It is painted with oil on linen. The woman's head is in the lower left half of the painting. It is tilted almost horizontally and turned slightly to the side. The wrinkleless neutral-beige-coloured face has an oval shape. The hair is parted in the middle and coiffed back like a bonnet. White eyeballs without pupils stand out under strong black brows. The eyelids have no eyelashes. Below her straight nose lies a small mouth with a red upper lip and a pale red lower lip. A sharp jagged edge in brown and cream runs from the chin to the nape of the neck. Two black tubes with protuberances emerge from the sides of the hollow appearing base of the neck. They wind around each other and lead to the upper right corner of the picture. From there comes a third tube that wraps around the other two twice before disappearing again in the upper right corner. The background of the picture is divided into two parts. The upper two-thirds are cream-coloured, and the lower third is dominated by red tones. The coloured areas are very clearly delineated from each other. The red-dominated coloured area is divided into fields, some of which are long and narrow, others almost square. All the fields are filled with ornaments; most of them are white and some in blue.
