Guido da Vigevano’s Anatomie, Abbildung 8 Die Seite aus einem Buch zeigt die Illustration eines menschlichen Körpers. In der linken oberen Ecke ist sie mit einem kurzen lateinischen Text versehen. Die Seite ist Bestandteil einer Serie von insgesamt 17 Abbildungen, die die Anatomie des Menschen zeigen. Die Zeichnung ist in schwarz-weiß ausgeführt. Der Umriss des Körpers tritt als markante schwarze Linie hervor. Knochen und Gelenke sind in Grautönen dargestellt, die inneren Organe bleiben weiß. Die Arme und Beine erscheinen sehr dünn, Muskeln oder Sehnen sind nicht abgebildet. Erkennbar sind die Gelenke der Hände, des Ellenbogens, der Schultern, der Hüfte, der Knie und der Füße sowie die Schlüsselbeine. Finger und Zehen wurden lediglich angedeutet. Auf dem Hals sitzt der Kopf mit einem ausgearbeiteten Gesicht, Ohren und kurzen gelockten Haaren. Das Gesicht ist rund, die Augen sind geschlossen, die Mundwinkel weisen nach unten. In der Bauchhöhle sind die Umrisse der Verdauungsorgane hervorgehoben. Die Flächen neben den Organen sind grau und dunkelgrau schraffiert. Wie ein breites helles Band zieht sich das Zwerchfell über die Brusthöhle. Von oben führt die Speiseröhre wie ein dünner Schlauch nahezu gerade vom Hals abwärts in den zwiebelförmig dargestellten Magen. Dabei durchstößt sie das Zwerchfell. Der Darm, der in Schlingen die untere Fläche der Bauchhöhle füllt, beginnt rechts neben dem Magen. Der Text in lateinischer Sprache beginnt auf Kopfhöhe der Zeichnung und zieht sich in kurzen Zeilen bis auf Höhe des Oberarms der Illustration. Er ist in kräftigen verschnörkelten Buchstaben geschrieben. — — Guido da Vigevano's Anatomy, Figure 8 This page from a book shows an illustration of a human body. It is accompanied by a short Latin text in the upper left corner. The page is part of a series of 17 illustrations altogether demonstrating human anatomy. The drawing is executed in black and white. The outline of the body stands out because of its prominent bold black line. The bones and joints are depicted in shades of grey, the internal organs remain white. The arms and legs appear very thin. Muscles or tendons are not depicted. The joints of the hands, elbow, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet, as well as the collarbones, are recognisable. Fingers and toes have only been indicated. On top of the neck, is the head with a detailed face, ears, and short curly hair. The face is round, the eyes are closed, and the corners of the mouth point downwards. In the abdominal cavity, the outlines of the digestive organs are bolded and emphasised. The areas next to the organs are hatched in grey and dark grey. The diaphragm stretches across the thoracic cavity like a wide light band. From above, the oesophagus runs like a thin tube almost straight down from the neck into the onion-shaped stomach. In doing so, it pierces the diaphragm. The intestine, which fills the lower surface of the abdominal cavity in loops, begins to the right of the stomach. The Latin text in the upper left corner begins at the level of the figure’s head and continues in short lines up to the level of the figure’s upper arm. It is written in bold squiggly letters.

Marmorgrabstein eines griechischen Arztes Der graue aufrechtstehende Quader zeigt einen sitzenden Mann, neben dem ein nackter Junge steht. Der Stein ist 80 Zentimeter hoch, an der dicksten Stelle zirka 9 Zentimeter dick und 56 Zentimeter breit. Das Halbrelief ist nach oben durch einen Vorsprung und nach unten durch eine Stufe im Stein abgegrenzt. Das untere Viertel bedecken griechische Buchstaben in waagerecht verlaufenden Zeilen. Die beiden Figuren sind mittig auf der glatten Oberfläche platziert. Der Arzt links sitzt auf einem Hocker mit viereckiger Sitzfläche. Sein Gewand fällt in lockeren Falten bis auf die Knöchel. Sein Gesichtszüge sind nicht deutlich erkennbar. Das Gesicht des Mediziners ist dem Patienten zugewandt. Sein rechter Arm ist ausgestreckt, die Hand liegt auf dem etwas gewölbten Bauch des Jungen. Der steht aufrecht mit herabhängenden Armen. Einige Rippen zeichnen sich ab. Der Blick ist auf den Arzt gerichtet. Im Gesicht des Patienten sind Augen, Nase und Mund deutlich herausgearbeitet. Unter den kurzen Haaren treten die Ohren hervor. Rechts neben dem Jungen steht ein bauchiges Gefäß mit kuppelartigem Deckel. Es reicht ihm bis über das Knie. Es scheint auf einem runden Fuß zu stehen. Ein Henkel verläuft über der Kuppelspitze. Der Grabstein ist dem griechischen Arzt Jason gewidmet, der im 2. Jahrhundert nach Christus praktizierte. — — Marble Tombstone of a Greek Doctor The upright grey tombstone depicts a seated man with a naked boy standing next to him. The stone is 80 centimetres high, about 9 centimetres thick at its thickest point, and 56 centimetres wide. The half-relief is delimited at the top by an edge and at the bottom by a step in the stone. The lower quarter is covered by Greek letters in horizontal lines. The two figures are placed centrally on a smooth surface. The doctor on the left sits on a stool with a square seat. His robe falls in loose folds to his ankles. His facial features are not clearly visible. The doctor's face is turned towards the patient. His right arm is outstretched, his hand rests on the boy's somewhat bulging belly. The boy is standing upright with his arms hanging down. A few ribs are visible. His gaze is directed towards the doctor. In the patient's face, the eyes, nose, and mouth are clearly outlined. The ears protrude from under the short hair. To the right of the boy is a bulbous vessel with a dome-like lid. It reaches above the boy's knee. It seems to stand on a round foot. A handle runs over the top of the dome. The tombstone is dedicated to the Greek physician Jason, who practised in the 2nd century AD.

Die geometrische Darstellung des Stomachion-Diagramms — Das quadratische Blatt ist in geometrische Figuren, meist Dreiecke, unterteilt. Das Blatt ist mit einem 12x12 Gitternetz versehen, das mit feinen schwarzen gestrichelten Linien ausgeführt ist. Das Gitternetz besteht also aus 144 Quadraten. Vor diesen Hintergrund bilden durchgehende, breitere und schwarze Linien die geometrischen Figuren. Vier Linien durchschneiden die gesamte Fläche des quadratischen Blatts. Eine vertikale Senkrechte halbiert es in zwei Rechtecke. Diese wiederum werden durch Diagonalen in je zwei rechtwinklige Dreiecke geteilt. Im Rechteck links verläuft die Diagonale von links unten nach rechts oben, im Rechteck rechts von rechts unten nach links oben. Eine weitere Linie verläuft diagonal von links oben nach rechts unten über das quadratische Blatt. Sie schneidet die Diagonale im linken Rechteck und die vertikale Senkrechte. Außerdem teilt sie das Quadrat in zwei gleichschenklige Dreiecke. Die rechten Winkel dieser Dreiecke befinden sich links unten und rechts oben. Kürzere Linien unterteilen die so entstandenen Dreiecke in weitere unregelmäßige Dreiecke, zwei unregelmäßige Vierecke und ein unregelmäßiges Fünfeck. Sowohl in den beiden Rechtecken als auch in den beiden gleichschenkligen Dreiecken befinden sich sieben geometrische Figuren. —— The geometric representation of the Stomachion diagram — The square sheet is divided into geometric figures, mostly triangles. The sheet has a 12x12 grid with fine black dotted lines. The grid thus consists of 144 squares. Overlaid on this grid background, there are continuous, broader, and black lines that form the geometric figures. Four lines cut through the entire surface of the square sheet. A vertical perpendicular line divides it into two rectangles. These, in turn, are divided by diagonal lines into two right-angled triangles each. In the rectangle on the left, the diagonal runs from the bottom left to the top right. In the rectangle on the right, the diagonal runs from the bottom right to the top left. Across the entire square sheet, another line runs diagonally from the top left to the bottom right. It intersects the diagonal in the left rectangle and the vertical perpendicular. It also divides the entire square sheet into two isosceles triangles. The right angles of these triangles are at the bottom left and top right. Shorter lines divide the triangles, thus creating further irregular triangles, two irregular squares, and an irregular pentagon. There are seven geometric figures in both of the two rectangles and the two isosceles triangles.

Schwarzfiguriger Terrakotta-Säulenkrater — Das schwarze vasenähnliche Tongefäß mit rundem Fuß zeigt schwarze Figuren auf einem rötlichen Bildfeld. Es stammt aus dem späten 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Der bauchige Vasenkörper ruht auf einem runden, gestuften, terrakottafarbenen Fuß. Auf den Vasenschultern sind die vertikal verlaufenden Henkel angebracht. Sie führen zum hervorspringenden Rand der Vasenöffnung. Das Bildfeld prangt auf dem Bauch des Gefäßes. Außer an seiner Unterseite ist es von Ornamentbändern gerahmt. Das Bild zeigt zwei Männer bei einem Feuer auf einem Altar, das vor einem Sockel mit Statue lodert. Die Statue befindet sich rechts auf der Darstellung. Ihr Körper ist säulenartig gestaltet. Gliedmaßen sind nicht erkennbar. Auf Höhe des Unterleibs ragt ein sich leicht nach oben krümmender Sporn heraus. Dieser scheint einen Phallus darzustellen. Deutlich erkennbar ist der Kopf der Statue. Die Figur trägt einen Helm und hat einen spitz zulaufenden Kinnbart. Links im Bildfeld beugt sich ein Mann leicht nach vorn zu einem etwa kniehohen Tisch. Er ist mit einem kurzen, enganliegenden Gewand bekleidet. In seiner Linken hält er ein Messer. Auf den Tisch sind Eingeweide gehäuft, darunter liegen ein Tierkopf und Skelettteile. Rechts neben den Tisch hält der zweite Mann an einem Spieß Fleisch in das hohe Feuer auf dem Altar. Am oberen Bildrand sind, gleichsam herabhängend, beutel- und schlauchförmige Organe positioniert. —— Black-Figure Terracotta Column-Krater — The black vase-like terracotta vessel with a round base depicts black figures as part of a scene against a reddish background. It dates from the late 5th century B.C. The round-bodied vase rests on a round, stepped, and terracotta-coloured base. The vertically running handles are attached to the shoulders of the vase. They lead to the protruding rim of the vase opening. The area occupied by the scene is emblazoned on the belly of the vase. Except for its underside, it is framed by ornamental bands. The picture shows two men at a fire on an altar blazing in front of a pedestal with a statue. The statue is depicted at the right end of the scene. Its body is columnar in shape and its limbs are not visible. At the level of the abdomen, a spur curves slightly upwards. This seems to represent a phallus. The head of the statue is clearly visible. The statue wears a helmet and has a pointed chin beard. At the left end of the scene, a man is bending slightly forward towards a table that is approximately knee height. He is dressed in a short, tight-fitting robe. In his left hand, he holds a knife. Entrails are heaped on the table, and an animal's head and skeletal parts lie underneath. To the right of the table, the second man is holding meat on a spit in the high fire on the altar. On the upper edge of the scene, hanging downwards, are pouch- and tube-shaped organs.
