Rotfiguriger Terrakotta-Glockenkrater — Das Foto zeigt einen Ausschnitt eines oben offene glockenförmige Weinmisch-Gefäß aus Ton, der hat einen runden Fuß. Auf seinem schwarzen Korpus sind rötlich leuchtende Figuren dargestellt. Das Gefäß ist 32 Zentimeter hoch. Der bauchige Korpus steht auf dem kräftigen flachen Fuß. Er weitet sich nach oben und endet in einem auskragenden Rand. Sein Durchmesser beträgt 33 Zentimeter. Unterhalb der Auskragung sind zwei horizontale Henkel angebracht. Zwischen den Henkeln sind die Figuren platziert. Sie werden ober- und unterhalb der Szene von Ornamentbändern eingerahmt. Den Mittelpunkt der Szene bildet ein niedriger Altar. Er reicht bis zu den Knien der Figuren, die um ihn gruppiert sind. Auf dem Altar sind Holzscheite säuberlich aufgeschichtet. An den Scheiten verlaufen kurze weiße Striche schräg nach rechts oben. Sie könnten ein Feuer oder Bratengeruch andeuten. Hinter dem Altar befindet sich ein schlanker Baum mit wenigen länglichen Blättern. Um den Altar stehen drei barfüßige Männer, einer links und zwei rechts. Der Mann links ist mit einem locker um die Hüften geschlungenen Tuch bekleidet. Auf seinem dunklen lockigen Haar trägt er, wie die anderen Männer auch, einen Kranz. In der linken Hand hält er einen Stab, mit der rechten weist er zum Altar. Ihm gegenüber, rechts neben dem Altar, steht ein Mann mit einer Schale in den Händen. Auf der Schale liegt etwas Weißes. Auch er trägt ein lockeres Gewand um die Hüften. Rechts neben diesem Mann befindet sich ein weiterer. Dieser trägt ein fließendes Gewand, das bis zu den Knöcheln reicht und eine Schulter bedeckt. Zwei unbekleidete, ebenfalls barfüßige Männer mit Kränzen im Haar flankieren die drei. Sie tragen lange Spieße, um deren obere Enden vermutlich Eingeweide geschlungen sind. Diese Vase stammt aus dem späten 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Sie ist im Besitz des Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. —— Red-figure Terracotta Bell Krater — The open-topped, bell-shaped terracotta vessel with handles, is a wine-mixing vessel that has a round foot and is 32 centimetres high. The round-bodied vessel rests on a thick and flat base. It widens towards the top and ends in a projecting rim. Its diameter is 33 centimetres. Below the rim are two horizontal handles. On the black surface of the vessel, there is a scene with vibrant reddish figures depicted. The figures are placed between the handles. They are framed above and below the scene by ornamental bands. A low altar forms the centre of the scene. It reaches the knees of the figures grouped around it. Logs are neatly piled up on the altar. On the logs, short white lines run diagonally upwards to the right. They could convey a fire or the smell of roasting. Behind the altar is a slender tree with a few elongated leaves. Around the altar are three barefoot men, one on the left and two on the right. All three wear wreathes in their dark curly hair. The man on the left is dressed in a shawl loosely wrapped around his hips. In his left hand, he holds a staff and with his right, he points to the altar. Opposite him, to the right of the altar, stands a man with a bowl in his hands. On the bowl is something white. He too wears a loose robe around his hips. To the right of this second man is another. This one wears a flowing robe that reaches down to his ankles and covers one shoulder. Additionally, flanking the three men are two unclothed men who are also barefoot with wreaths in their hair. They carry long skewers, around the upper ends of which are probably entrails. This vase dates from the late 5th century B.C. It is in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.

Red-figured terracotta bell-krater

Von Euphronios signierter athenischer Krater mit roten Figuren Das Terrakottagefäß mit Henkeln stammt aus einem etruskischen Grab des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Der Ausschnitt zeigt eine Szene aus Homers Ilias, in der Zeus‘ Sohn Sarpedon von Patroklos getötet wurde. Ein Krater ist ein griechisches Weinmischgefäß in Form eines Topfes, der sich nach oben hin verbreitert. Der obere und untere Rand des hier gezeigten Kraters ist mit einem orangefarbenen Schnörkelmuster verziert. Auch die Figuren darauf sind in Orange gehalten. Sie heben sich deutlich vom schwarzen Untergrund ab. In der Mitte der Szene ist Sarpedon auf der Seite liegend erkennbar. Sein Körper nimmt etwa die untere Hälfte der Darstellung ein. Seine Beine sind leicht angewinkelt, der rechte Arm liegt vor dem Körper. Die in Braun aufgemalten welligen Haare fallen ihm auf die Schultern. Der athletische Körper ist unbekleidet. Dünne rote Linien verlaufen vom Herzbereich schräg nach links unten, ebenso von Bauch und rechtem Oberschenkel. Sarpedon wird an Knien und Schultern von zwei menschlichen Gestalten mit Adlerflügeln und Adlerköpfen gehalten. Sie tragen kurze Tuniken. Die schwarzen Vollbärte stehen waagerecht vom Kinn ab. Die Gestalten sind die Personifizierungen von Schlaf und Tod. Mittig hinter Sarpedon steht eine weitere Figur aufrecht nach links gewandt.Es ist Hermes. Seine rechte Hand ist erhoben, in der linken hält er den Stab. Auf dem Kopf sitzt der geflügelte Helm. Darunter quellen gewellte schwarze Haare hervor, die ihm bis auf die Schultern fallen. Er trägt einen Umhang über einem tunikaartigen Untergewand. Links und rechts wird die Szene von je einem Soldaten mit Speer und Schild eingerahmt. Diese Figuren sind in dem dargestellten Ausschnitt nur teilweise erkennbar. Dieser Krater von Euphronios hat ein Fassungsvermögen von 45 Litern. Euphronios war einer der bedeutendsten griechischen Vasenmaler des rotfigurigen Stils. Das Gefäß wird im Museo Nazionale Archeologico Cerite in der Nähe von Rom aufbewahrt. — — Athenian Krater Signed by Euphronios with Red Figures The photo shows a section of a terracotta vessel with handles. It comes from an Etruscan tomb of the 6th century BC. This section depicts a scene from Homer's Iliad in which Zeus' son, Sarpedon, was killed by Patroklos. A krater is a Greek wine-mixing vessel in the shape of a pot that widens towards the top. The upper and lower rims of the krater shown here are decorated with an orange scroll pattern. The figures on it are also in orange and clearly stand out against the black background. In the middle of the scene, Sarpedon can be seen lying on his side. His body takes up about the lower half of the depiction. His legs are slightly bent, and his right arm is in front of his body. The wavy hair, painted in brown, falls to his shoulders. His athletic body is unclothed. Thin red lines run diagonally from the heart area down to the left, as well as from the abdomen and right thigh. Sarpedon is held at the knees and shoulders by two human figures with eagle wings and eagle heads. They are wearing short tunics. Their full black beards stand out horizontally from the chin. They are the personifications of sleep and death. In the centre behind Sarpedon stands another figure standing upright and facing to the left. It is Hermes. His right hand is raised, and on his left, he holds a staff. A winged helmet sits on his head. Wavy black hair spills out from under it, falling to his shoulders. He wears a cloak over a tunic-like undergarment. On either side, the scene is framed by a soldier with a spear and shield. These figures are only partially visible in the photo shown. This krater signed by Euphronios has a capacity of 45 litres. Euphronios was one of the most important Greek vase painters of the red-figure style. This krater is located in the Cerite National Archeological Museum near Rome.

Es ist als dünner Schlauch gestaltet. Ein etwas dickerer cremefarbener Schlauch bildet am unteren Ende des Magens in engen Windungen und Krümmungen das Knäuel. Dies repräsentiert den Dünndarm, der in einen hellrosafarbenen Sack mündet. Der Sack erscheint wie in ein weitmaschiges Netz gepresst und geht in einen dickeren Schlauch über, der die gleiche Farbe und die gleiche netzartige Struktur an der Oberfläche besitzt. Dieser Schlauch stellt den Dickdarm dar. Er verläuft in rechten Winkeln, wie ein Rahmen, um das Dünndarmknäuel. Sein Ende weist senkrecht nach unten und verjüngt sich. Light appears to fall on it from the upper right. The 3D model depicts a tube of varying thicknesses that is twisted into a ball. At the top of this ball is a creamy white pouch-like structure with a smooth surface. This represents the stomach. A piece of the oesophagus protrudes from it and is shaped like a thin tube. A slightly thicker cream-coloured tube forms the tangle at the lower end of the stomach in tight turns and bends. This represents the small intestine, which opens into a light pink sack. The sack appears as if pressed into a wide-meshed net and merges into a thicker tube that is the same colour and has the same net-like structure on the surface. This tube represents the large intestine. It runs at right angles, like a frame, around the small intestinal bundle. Its end points vertically downwards and tapers. On the image of the 3D model, there is a sign for a play button. This can be used to activate a short animation that rotates the 3D model once around an imaginary longitudinal axis.

Eine weibliche Figur mit offenem Torso Die bräunlich-graue Statue ohne Kopf wurde 1885 in Mittelitalien, südöstlich von Rom ausgegraben. Sie stammt aus der Zeit zwischen dem 4. und 2. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Die Figur aus Terrakotta ist 26,5 Zentimeter hoch. Neben dem Kopf fehlen die linke Schulter und die Füße. Trotz des Verlustes dieser Körperteile lässt sich eine aufrechte Haltung erkennen. Die Frauengestalt scheint auf ihrem rechten Bein zu stehen, das linke ist etwas angewinkelt. Der rechte Arm hängt am Körper herab, vom linken ist der Unterarm erhalten, der in die Hüfte gestützt ist. Der Torso ist in ein fließendes knöchellanges Gewand gehüllt. An der Schulter, um die Hüften und zum Knöchel hin ist es üppig gefaltet. Der rechte Arm ist bis zum Ellenbogen bedeckt. Ein vertikal verlaufender ovaler Ausschnitt zieht sich vom Brustbein bis zur Scham. Darin sind die inneren Organe sichtbar. Ein senkrecht stehender Quader unterhalb des Brustbeins bezeichnet das Herz. Ein würfelförmiges Gebilde darunter stellt den Magen dar. An der breitesten Stelle, in der Mitte des Ausschnitts, befindet sich der waagerecht verlaufende Darm. Seine senkrecht angeordneten Schlingen füllen das gesamte Zentrum aus. Unterhalb des Darms liegen weitere Organe wie die Nieren. Die Statue war vermutlich eine Opfergabe, verbunden mit der Heilung erkrankter Organe oder stand im Zusammenhang mit dem Wunsch nach Fruchtbarkeit. — — A Female Figure with an Open Torso This brownish-grey statue without a head was excavated in 1885 in central Italy, southeast of Rome. It dates from the period between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC. The terracotta figure is 26.5 centimetres high. Besides the head, the left shoulder and the feet are also missing. Despite the loss of these body parts, an upright posture can be discerned. The female figure appears to be standing on her right leg and the left leg is slightly bent. The right arm hangs down the body, and the forearm of the left arm is preserved, supported on the hip. The torso is wrapped in a flowing ankle-length robe. It is luxuriantly folded at the shoulder, around the hips and towards the ankle. The right arm is covered up to the elbow. There is a vertical oval-shaped cutout that runs from the breastbone to the pubic region. The internal organs are visible within it. There is a vertically upright cuboid below the sternum indicating the heart. A cube-shaped structure below it indicates the stomach. There is a horizontally running intestine in the middle of the cutout at its widest point. Its vertically arranged loops fill the entire centre. Below the intestine are other organs such as the kidneys. It is probable that the statue was a votive offering associated with the healing of diseased organs or was related to the desire for fertility.

Schwarzfiguriger Terrakotta-Säulenkrater — Das schwarze vasenähnliche Tongefäß mit rundem Fuß zeigt schwarze Figuren auf einem rötlichen Bildfeld. Es stammt aus dem späten 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Der bauchige Vasenkörper ruht auf einem runden, gestuften, terrakottafarbenen Fuß. Auf den Vasenschultern sind die vertikal verlaufenden Henkel angebracht. Sie führen zum hervorspringenden Rand der Vasenöffnung. Das Bildfeld prangt auf dem Bauch des Gefäßes. Außer an seiner Unterseite ist es von Ornamentbändern gerahmt. Das Bild zeigt zwei Männer bei einem Feuer auf einem Altar, das vor einem Sockel mit Statue lodert. Die Statue befindet sich rechts auf der Darstellung. Ihr Körper ist säulenartig gestaltet. Gliedmaßen sind nicht erkennbar. Auf Höhe des Unterleibs ragt ein sich leicht nach oben krümmender Sporn heraus. Dieser scheint einen Phallus darzustellen. Deutlich erkennbar ist der Kopf der Statue. Die Figur trägt einen Helm und hat einen spitz zulaufenden Kinnbart. Links im Bildfeld beugt sich ein Mann leicht nach vorn zu einem etwa kniehohen Tisch. Er ist mit einem kurzen, enganliegenden Gewand bekleidet. In seiner Linken hält er ein Messer. Auf den Tisch sind Eingeweide gehäuft, darunter liegen ein Tierkopf und Skelettteile. Rechts neben den Tisch hält der zweite Mann an einem Spieß Fleisch in das hohe Feuer auf dem Altar. Am oberen Bildrand sind, gleichsam herabhängend, beutel- und schlauchförmige Organe positioniert. —— Black-Figure Terracotta Column-Krater — The black vase-like terracotta vessel with a round base depicts black figures as part of a scene against a reddish background. It dates from the late 5th century B.C. The round-bodied vase rests on a round, stepped, and terracotta-coloured base. The vertically running handles are attached to the shoulders of the vase. They lead to the protruding rim of the vase opening. The area occupied by the scene is emblazoned on the belly of the vase. Except for its underside, it is framed by ornamental bands. The picture shows two men at a fire on an altar blazing in front of a pedestal with a statue. The statue is depicted at the right end of the scene. Its body is columnar in shape and its limbs are not visible. At the level of the abdomen, a spur curves slightly upwards. This seems to represent a phallus. The head of the statue is clearly visible. The statue wears a helmet and has a pointed chin beard. At the left end of the scene, a man is bending slightly forward towards a table that is approximately knee height. He is dressed in a short, tight-fitting robe. In his left hand, he holds a knife. Entrails are heaped on the table, and an animal's head and skeletal parts lie underneath. To the right of the table, the second man is holding meat on a spit in the high fire on the altar. On the upper edge of the scene, hanging downwards, are pouch- and tube-shaped organs.

Illustration zu De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (John Arderne zugeschrieben) Die Buchseite zeigt die farbige Abbildung eines männlichen Körpers in Vorderansicht. Er ist von einem lateinischen Text ergänzt, der die Seite links und rechts vom Körper vollständig füllt. Die Körperdarstellung erstreckt sich über nahezu die gesamte Höhe der Buchseite. Oberhalb des Kopfes und unterhalb der Füße ist jeweils ein schmaler Rand. Kopf und Hals sind im Querschnitt abgebildet und erscheinen doppelt, wie bei einem aufgeklappten Scherenschnitt, dessen Falz am Hinterkopf verläuft. Das obere Drittel beider Kopfdarstellungen nimmt das in Weiß halbkreisförmig abgebildete Gehirn ein. Darunter ziehen sich bis in den Halsbereich netzartig dünne rote Linien. In beiden Hälsen ist eine Halswirbelsäule erkennbar. Beide Wirbelsäulen vereinigen sich auf Schulterhöhe. Sie erinnern an Schläuche. Mit roten Querstrichen ist die Abtrennung der einzelnen Wirbel markiert. Im Kinnbereich setzen mit einem dunkleren Rot, ebenfalls schlauchartig dargestellt, die Speiseröhren an, die v-förmig aufeinander zustreben, um sich nahe des Herzens im geöffneten Torso zu verbinden. Die Arme sind angewinkelt, die Ellenbogen weisen zu den Seiten. Die Hände scheinen unter die Rippen zu greifen, um den Brustkorb offen zu halten. Darin liegt das in Rottönen dargestellte Herz. Es nimmt fast den gesamten Raum oberhalb des Zwerchfells ein. Unterhalb liegen der länglich dargestellte Magen und der in Wellenformen abgebildete Darm. Zwei Schnittkanten verlaufen vertikal von oben bis zu den Genitalien über den Torso. Sie sind in einem kräftigen Rot gehalten. Entlang der Schnittkanten sind immer wieder kurze, im gleichen Rotton ausgeführte Striche sichtbar. Das Rot erinnert an Blut. Die Füße stehen schräg, hüftbreit auseinander. Wie die Arme sind die Beine als weiße Flächen mit dunkler Umrandung abgebildet. Im schwarz geschriebenen Text sind einzelne Worte und Sätze in Rot ausgeführt. Auffällig sind sechs größere Symbole, die unregelmäßig darin auftauchen. Sie sind in Blau gehalten. Eines erinnert an ein auf der Seite liegendes groß geschriebenes H. Der Titel der Handschrift aus dem 15. Jahrhundert ließe sich frei mit „Die Kunst des Körpers und der Chirurgie“ übersetzen. Sie lässt sich auf den englischen Chirurgen John Arderne zurückführen, der im 14. Jahrhundert praktizierte. — — Illustration to De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (attributed to John Arderne) The book page shows a coloured illustration of a male body in front view. It is complemented by a Latin text that completely fills the page to the left and right of the body. The depiction of the body extends over almost the entire height of the book page. There is a narrow margin above the head and below the feet. The head and neck are depicted in cross-section and appear double, like an unfolded silhouette whose fold runs along the back of the head. The upper third part of both head depictions is taken up by the brain, which is depicted by a white semi-circular shape. Below it, thin red lines extend into the neck area like a net. A cervical spine is visible in both necks. Both spines join at shoulder level and resemble tubes. The separation of the individual vertebrae is marked with red horizontal lines. In the area near the chins, the oesophagi are also depicted as tubes. They are dark red and move towards each other in a V-shape to join near the heart in the open torso. The arms are bent, and the elbows point to the sides. The hands seem to reach under the ribs to hold the chest open. The heart lies within and is depicted in shades of red. It occupies almost the entire space above the diaphragm. Below the heart is an elongated stomach and the intestines are depicted in wavy forms. Across the torso, a bold red outline runs vertically from the top, near the neck, to the genitals, resembling cut edges. Repetitive short strokes in the same shade of red are visible along the cut edges. The red is reminiscent of blood. The feet are at an angle and hip-width apart. Similar to the arms, the legs are depicted as white areas with a dark border. Within the written black text, individual words and sentences are depicted in red. Most noticeable are six larger symbols that appear irregularly throughout the text. They are blue coloured. One of them is reminiscent of a capital H lying on the page. The title of the 15th-century manuscript could be freely translated as "The Art of the Body and Surgery". It can be traced back to the English surgeon John Arderne, who practised in the 14th century.

Sie sind als beutelförmige Gebilde auf der Bauchdecke des Tieres liegend dargestellt. Hinter dem Mann stehen sieben weitere Männer. Alle haben kurz gelockte Haare, einige Bart. Einer mit nacktem Oberkörper trägt eine Axt über seiner Schulter und eine Kanne in der Hand. Neben ihm hält einer in langem fließendem Gewand einen Stock. Der junge Mann und das Rind sind in hellen Grautönen dargestellt, die Männer hinter ihm in dunklem Grau. Im oberen Drittel der Montage, über den Köpfen der Männer, befindet sich der Teil aus dem Manuskript. Unter einer Überschrift in roten griechischen Großbuchstaben folgen Zeilen in schwarzen Kleinbuchstaben. Die Abstände zwischen den Wörtern und Zeilen sind sehr gering. Nach unten und rechts außen verblasst der Text. Am linken Rand neben dem Fließtext und der Überschrift ist ein Ornament in Rot angebracht, das an eine Initiale erinnert. Dieses Objekt steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem 3D-Modell des Verdauungssystems nach Aristoteles. — — The Work of Aristotle/ From Observation to Text The montage in portrait format shows a metal hook, a scenic representation of an animal sacrifice, and part of a manuscript. One with a bare torso carries an axe over his shoulder and a jug in his hand. Next to him, a man in long flowing robes holds a stick. The young man and the cow are depicted in light shades of grey, the men behind them in dark grey. In the upper third of the montage, above the heads of the men, is the part from the manuscript. Under a heading in red Greek capitals follow lines in black lowercase. The spacing between the words and lines is very small. The text fades towards the bottom and the far right. On the left margin next to the continuous text and the heading, is an ornament in red, reminiscent of an initial. This object is closely related to the 3D model of “Aristotle's Digestive System.”
