Anonym, K. Sharḥ al-Maqāma al-Ṣalāḥiyya fī l-Khayl wa-al-Bayṭāra, über Pferde und Rache Die Darstellung aus dem 13. Jahrhundert präsentiert die Ansicht eines Pferdekörpers mit seinen Eingeweiden, dazu Text in arabischen Schriftzeichen. Kurze Bezeichnungen an einzelnen Körperteilen lassen an deren Benennung denken. Das Bild zeigt die Silhouette des Pferdes zweidimensional, vergleichbar mit der Modellvorlage auf einem Bastelbogen. Die rot ausgemalten Beine mit den braunen Hufen sind links und rechts seitlich vom Körper weggestreckt. Am ebenfalls rot gestalteten Kopf sind links und rechts die spitzen Ohren, Augen und ein Maul mit Nüstern auszumachen. Den Kopf umläuft unter dem Hals hindurch ein goldfarbener Ring, der an einen Heiligenschein erinnert. Der Schweif ragt senkrecht in die untere Bildhälfte. Er ist, wie die übrige Körperfläche, in einem kräftigen Rot gehalten. Auf der Körperfläche sind innere Organe wie Herz, Lunge, Milz und Darm dargestellt. Das Herz befindet sich mittig darauf. Es hat nahezu die Form eines menschlichen Herzens. Zu seinen beiden Seiten erstrecken sich längliche Ovale bis zum Ansatz der Vorderbeine. Links, unterhalb des Herzens, liegt ein kleineres blaues Oval. Weiße Umrisse grenzen die einzelnen inneren Organe voneinander ab. Rund um die Illustration sind auf dem hellen Untergrund goldfarbene runde Scheiben verteilt, deren Ränder von schwarzen Punkten umlaufen werden. Links oben auf dem Hochformat verlaufen acht Textzeilen senkrecht. Das Blatt müsste um 90° gedreht werden, um sie zu lesen. In der rechten oberen Ecke sind zwei in Rot geschriebene waagerecht verlaufende Zeilen platziert. — — Anonymous, K. Short descriptions near individual parts of the body suggest their naming. The photo shows a two-dimensional silhouette of a horse, reminiscent of a model template on a handicraft sheet. The red legs with brown hooves are stretched out to the left and right sides of the body. Also painted red are the pointed ears, eyes and muzzle with nostrils which are placed on both sides of the head. A golden ring, reminiscent of a halo, runs around the head and under the neck. The red-painted tail projects vertically into the lower half of the picture. Internal organs such as the heart, lungs, spleen, and intestines are depicted on the body's surface. The heart is in the centre. It has a shape similar to that of a human heart. On both sides, elongated ovals extend to the base of the front legs. On the left, below the heart, is a smaller blue oval. White outlines delineate the individual internal organs. Around the illustration, gold-coloured round discs are distributed on a light-coloured background, their edges encircled by black dots. At the top left of the portrait format, eight lines of text run vertically. The sheet would require a 90-degree turn to read them. In the upper right corner, there are two horizontal lines of text written in red.

Illustration zu De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (John Arderne zugeschrieben) Die Buchseite zeigt die farbige Abbildung eines männlichen Körpers in Vorderansicht. Er ist von einem lateinischen Text ergänzt, der die Seite links und rechts vom Körper vollständig füllt. Die Körperdarstellung erstreckt sich über nahezu die gesamte Höhe der Buchseite. Oberhalb des Kopfes und unterhalb der Füße ist jeweils ein schmaler Rand. Kopf und Hals sind im Querschnitt abgebildet und erscheinen doppelt, wie bei einem aufgeklappten Scherenschnitt, dessen Falz am Hinterkopf verläuft. Das obere Drittel beider Kopfdarstellungen nimmt das in Weiß halbkreisförmig abgebildete Gehirn ein. Darunter ziehen sich bis in den Halsbereich netzartig dünne rote Linien. In beiden Hälsen ist eine Halswirbelsäule erkennbar. Beide Wirbelsäulen vereinigen sich auf Schulterhöhe. Sie erinnern an Schläuche. Mit roten Querstrichen ist die Abtrennung der einzelnen Wirbel markiert. Im Kinnbereich setzen mit einem dunkleren Rot, ebenfalls schlauchartig dargestellt, die Speiseröhren an, die v-förmig aufeinander zustreben, um sich nahe des Herzens im geöffneten Torso zu verbinden. Die Arme sind angewinkelt, die Ellenbogen weisen zu den Seiten. Die Hände scheinen unter die Rippen zu greifen, um den Brustkorb offen zu halten. Darin liegt das in Rottönen dargestellte Herz. Es nimmt fast den gesamten Raum oberhalb des Zwerchfells ein. Unterhalb liegen der länglich dargestellte Magen und der in Wellenformen abgebildete Darm. Zwei Schnittkanten verlaufen vertikal von oben bis zu den Genitalien über den Torso. Sie sind in einem kräftigen Rot gehalten. Entlang der Schnittkanten sind immer wieder kurze, im gleichen Rotton ausgeführte Striche sichtbar. Das Rot erinnert an Blut. Die Füße stehen schräg, hüftbreit auseinander. Wie die Arme sind die Beine als weiße Flächen mit dunkler Umrandung abgebildet. Im schwarz geschriebenen Text sind einzelne Worte und Sätze in Rot ausgeführt. Auffällig sind sechs größere Symbole, die unregelmäßig darin auftauchen. Sie sind in Blau gehalten. Eines erinnert an ein auf der Seite liegendes groß geschriebenes H. Der Titel der Handschrift aus dem 15. Jahrhundert ließe sich frei mit „Die Kunst des Körpers und der Chirurgie“ übersetzen. Sie lässt sich auf den englischen Chirurgen John Arderne zurückführen, der im 14. Jahrhundert praktizierte. — — Illustration to De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (attributed to John Arderne) The book page shows a coloured illustration of a male body in front view. It is complemented by a Latin text that completely fills the page to the left and right of the body. The depiction of the body extends over almost the entire height of the book page. There is a narrow margin above the head and below the feet. The head and neck are depicted in cross-section and appear double, like an unfolded silhouette whose fold runs along the back of the head. The upper third part of both head depictions is taken up by the brain, which is depicted by a white semi-circular shape. Below it, thin red lines extend into the neck area like a net. A cervical spine is visible in both necks. Both spines join at shoulder level and resemble tubes. The separation of the individual vertebrae is marked with red horizontal lines. In the area near the chins, the oesophagi are also depicted as tubes. They are dark red and move towards each other in a V-shape to join near the heart in the open torso. The arms are bent, and the elbows point to the sides. The hands seem to reach under the ribs to hold the chest open. The heart lies within and is depicted in shades of red. It occupies almost the entire space above the diaphragm. Below the heart is an elongated stomach and the intestines are depicted in wavy forms. Across the torso, a bold red outline runs vertically from the top, near the neck, to the genitals, resembling cut edges. Repetitive short strokes in the same shade of red are visible along the cut edges. The red is reminiscent of blood. The feet are at an angle and hip-width apart. Similar to the arms, the legs are depicted as white areas with a dark border. Within the written black text, individual words and sentences are depicted in red. Most noticeable are six larger symbols that appear irregularly throughout the text. They are blue coloured. One of them is reminiscent of a capital H lying on the page. The title of the 15th-century manuscript could be freely translated as "The Art of the Body and Surgery". It can be traced back to the English surgeon John Arderne, who practised in the 14th century.

Guido da Vigevano’s Anatomie, Abbildung 8 Die Seite aus einem Buch zeigt die Illustration eines menschlichen Körpers. In der linken oberen Ecke ist sie mit einem kurzen lateinischen Text versehen. Die Seite ist Bestandteil einer Serie von insgesamt 17 Abbildungen, die die Anatomie des Menschen zeigen. Die Zeichnung ist in schwarz-weiß ausgeführt. Der Umriss des Körpers tritt als markante schwarze Linie hervor. Knochen und Gelenke sind in Grautönen dargestellt, die inneren Organe bleiben weiß. Die Arme und Beine erscheinen sehr dünn, Muskeln oder Sehnen sind nicht abgebildet. Erkennbar sind die Gelenke der Hände, des Ellenbogens, der Schultern, der Hüfte, der Knie und der Füße sowie die Schlüsselbeine. Finger und Zehen wurden lediglich angedeutet. Auf dem Hals sitzt der Kopf mit einem ausgearbeiteten Gesicht, Ohren und kurzen gelockten Haaren. Das Gesicht ist rund, die Augen sind geschlossen, die Mundwinkel weisen nach unten. In der Bauchhöhle sind die Umrisse der Verdauungsorgane hervorgehoben. Die Flächen neben den Organen sind grau und dunkelgrau schraffiert. Wie ein breites helles Band zieht sich das Zwerchfell über die Brusthöhle. Von oben führt die Speiseröhre wie ein dünner Schlauch nahezu gerade vom Hals abwärts in den zwiebelförmig dargestellten Magen. Dabei durchstößt sie das Zwerchfell. Der Darm, der in Schlingen die untere Fläche der Bauchhöhle füllt, beginnt rechts neben dem Magen. Der Text in lateinischer Sprache beginnt auf Kopfhöhe der Zeichnung und zieht sich in kurzen Zeilen bis auf Höhe des Oberarms der Illustration. Er ist in kräftigen verschnörkelten Buchstaben geschrieben. — — Guido da Vigevano's Anatomy, Figure 8 This page from a book shows an illustration of a human body. It is accompanied by a short Latin text in the upper left corner. The page is part of a series of 17 illustrations altogether demonstrating human anatomy. The drawing is executed in black and white. The outline of the body stands out because of its prominent bold black line. The bones and joints are depicted in shades of grey, the internal organs remain white. The arms and legs appear very thin. Muscles or tendons are not depicted. The joints of the hands, elbow, shoulders, hips, knees, and feet, as well as the collarbones, are recognisable. Fingers and toes have only been indicated. On top of the neck, is the head with a detailed face, ears, and short curly hair. The face is round, the eyes are closed, and the corners of the mouth point downwards. In the abdominal cavity, the outlines of the digestive organs are bolded and emphasised. The areas next to the organs are hatched in grey and dark grey. The diaphragm stretches across the thoracic cavity like a wide light band. From above, the oesophagus runs like a thin tube almost straight down from the neck into the onion-shaped stomach. In doing so, it pierces the diaphragm. The intestine, which fills the lower surface of the abdominal cavity in loops, begins to the right of the stomach. The Latin text in the upper left corner begins at the level of the figure’s head and continues in short lines up to the level of the figure’s upper arm. It is written in bold squiggly letters.

Das sezierte Pferd — Die horizontal ausgerichtete Bildrolle aus dem 15. Jahrhundert zeigt neben japanischen Schriftzeichen im linken Drittel eine Abfolge von Pferdedarstellungen. Die Farbigkeit orientiert sich an den fünf Wandlungsphasen bzw. fünf Elementen der chinesischen Medizin, wobei hier für die Farbe Grün Grau eingesetzt wurde. Gelesen wurden derartige Bildrollen von rechts nach links. So startet dieses Dokument auf der rechten Seite mit einem Schriftzeichen auf hellem Untergrund, dessen Farben Schwarz, Weiß, Gelb, Grau und Rot für die fünf Elemente stehen. Dem folgt nach links ein Turm, dessen Fuß ein gelbes Rechteck bildet, darüber befinden sich ein schwarzer Kreis, eine rote hutähnliche Form, eine weiße Schale und eine graue Kugelform. Jedes Element ist mit einem Schriftzeichen bezeichnet. Nach links schließen sich die Darstellung eines männlichen Kopfes mit dem Ansatz eines um die Schultern liegenden Gewandes und eine geöffnete Hand mit nach oben gerichteten Fingern an. Die meisten Leser aus ostasiatischen Ländern würden den Kopf des Mannes als Buddha erkennen. Dem folgen drei Zeichnungen von Pferden, beginnend mit einer Seitenansicht in Schwarz-Weiß. Die sich nach links anschließende Darstellung lässt den Betrachtenden von oben auf das Tier blicken. Hier sind innere Organe in den Farben der fünf Elemente markiert und mit Schriftzeichen versehen. Das letzte Drittel der Darstellung eines Pferdes zeigt wieder eine Seitenansicht. Diesmal, diese ist farbig ausgeführt, wiederum in den Farben Schwarz, Grau, Gelb, Weiß und Rot. Zwischen den farbigen Zeichnungen befindet sich eine Art Legende. In ihr sind jeweils drei Organe einer Farbe der fünf Elemente zugeordnet und beschriftet. Fünf dünne rote Linien durchziehen die bildlichen Darstellungen. Sie führen von den Farben im Schriftzeichen auf dem rechten Teil der Bildrolle über zentrale Punkte in allen Zeichnungen und enden in der farbigen Seitenansicht des Pferdes. Im linken Drittel der Bildrolle sind schwarze japanische Schriftzeichen in mehreren Spalten positioniert. Bildrollen konnten einige Meter lang sein. —— The Dissected Horse — This horizontally formatted scroll from the 15th century depicts Japanese characters in the left-third portion of the scroll, followed by a sequence of horse depictions. The colours are based on the five phases of change or five elements of Chinese medicine, whereby grey was used here in lieu of the colour green. Scrolls, such as this one, were read from right to left. Thus, this document begins on the right with a character on a light background, whose colours (black, white, yellow, grey, and red) stand for the five elements. This is followed to the left by a tower whose base forms a yellow rectangle, stacked above which are a black circle, a red hat-like shape, a white semi-circle, and a grey spherical shape. Each element of the tower is inscribed with a character. To the left of the tower is a depiction of a male head with the base of a robe around his shoulders and an open hand with fingers pointing upwards. Most readers of East Asian countries would recognize the man's head as the Buddha. This is followed by three drawings of horses. The first drawing depicts the side view of a horse in black and white. To its left, the next drawing depicts the horse from an above viewpoint. Here, internal organs are marked in the colours of the five elements and inscribed with characters. The final and third drawing depicts another side view of a horse. However, this time in colour (black, grey, yellow, white, and red). Between the coloured drawings is a kind of legend. In it, three organs in each colour of the five elements are assigned and labelled. Five thin red lines run throughout all the pictorial representations. The red lines lead from the colours in the character on the right portion of the scroll, through central points in all the drawings throughout the scroll and end in the final side view of the coloured horse. In the left-third portion of the scroll, black Japanese characters are positioned in several columns. Image scrolls could be several metres long.

Umriss des Herzen Die Doppelseite des Nachdrucks der „Drei Reiche“ aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert zeigt neben Schriftzeichen eine einfache Illustration des Herzens. Auf dem linken Teil der Doppelseite ist mittig die Herzzeichnung platziert. Sie wird in der oberen Hälfte des Blattes von Textblöcken mit senkrecht verlaufenden Reihen von Schriftzeichen flankiert. Vom Herzen aus ragt eine Röhre gerade nach oben. Daraus führt ein Schlauch auf der linken Seite bogenförmig nach unten. Von ihrer rechten Seite gehen drei Schläuche ab, einer in einem Bogen nach oben, die anderen beiden nach unten. Alle nach unten führenden Schläuche enden etwa auf einer Linie mit der Spitze des Herzens. Die Schläuche sind an ihren Enden jeweils mit zwei Schriftzeichen versehen, das Herz an seiner Spitze mit sieben, die in zwei Zeilen erscheinen. Die Röhre weist links und rechts, im oberen Drittel, je ein Zeichen auf. Der rechte Teil der Doppelseite ist nahezu komplett mit Schriftzeichen gefüllt. Sie verlaufen senkrecht in neun Zeilen. Der Seitenrand oben ist etwa drei Finger breit, doppelt so breit wie der untere. Darstellung und Text sind von einer schwarzen Linie eingerahmt, die sich links und rechts mit den Seitenrändern deckt. Die Doppelseite ist am Falz und an den Außenkanten etwas vergilbt. — — Diagram of the Heart This double-page spread of a reprint of the "Three Realms" from the early 17th century shows a simple illustration of a heart next to characters. On the left part of the double page, the heart drawing is placed in the centre. It is flanked in the upper half of the page by blocks of text with rows of characters running vertically. From the heart, a pipe extends straight up. There are four tube-like connectors that branch off from the pipe. On the left side, a tube arcs downwards and from its right side, three tubes branch off. One in an upward arc, the other two downward. All the tubes arcing downwards end approximately in line with the point of the heart. The tubes each have two characters at their ends, the heart has seven at its tip, which appear in two lines. The pipe has one character each on the left and right, in the upper third. The right part of the double page is almost completely filled with characters. They run vertically in nine lines. The page margin at the top is about three fingers wide and twice as wide as the bottom. The illustration and text are framed by a black line that coincides with the page margins on the left and right. The double-page spread is somewhat yellowed at the fold and outer edges.
