Douris zugeschriebener athenischer Becher mit roten Figuren Das Foto zeigt in einem bogenförmigen Ausschnitt die Bemalung eines Bechers. In Orange sind mehrere Figuren auf schwarzem Grund aufgebracht. Die Szene beschreibt wie die Bacchantinnen Pentheus, den Sohn von Echion und Agaue, zerreißen. Als Bacchantinnen bezeichnet man Anhängerinnen des römischen Weingottes Bacchus. Auf dem Becher erscheinen sie als vier Frauengestalten, deren schwarze Haare im Nacken zusammengefasst sind. Das Schwarz der Haare wird durch einen feinen hellen Umriss vom schwarzen Untergrund abgegrenzt. Eine der Frauen trägt ein Kopftuch, die anderen drei je ein schmales Band um den Kopf. Alle sind in lange tunikaartige Gewänder gehüllt. Schwarze dünne Striche markieren Muster im Stoff. Die Bacchantin ganz links trägt ein einfaches Obergewand, Himation, darüber. Ihre linke Schulter und der linke Arm sind nicht bedeckt. In der rechten Hand hält sie ein Messer. Die Frau rechts neben ihr umfasst ein Hemation mit beiden Händen auf Taillenhöhe vor dem Bauch. Ihr Blick ist auf die übrigen beiden Bacchantinnen gerichtet, die Pentheus' Oberkörper mit seinem Kopf zwischen sich halten. Von der Öffnung seines zerrissenen Oberkörpers hängen dünne haarähnliche Fäden herab, die das Verschütten von viszeralem Blut andeuten könnten. Die Frauen haben die seitlich ausgestreckten Arme mit jeweils einer Hand gepackt, mit der freien Hand greifen sie beide in sein lockiges schwarzes Haar. Die Frauen tragen hüftlange Umhänge über ihren Untergewändern. Im rechten Abschnitt zeichnet sich eine kniende nackte Männergestalt mit Vollbart ab, die abwehrend beide Hände hebt. Die Szene erscheint auf mehreren Gefäßen aus Athen. Der hier gezeigte Becher gilt als das am besten erhaltene Stück. Er wird dem griechischen Vasenmaler Douris zugeschrieben, der am Ende des 6. und im 5. Jahrhundert vor Christus in Athen arbeitete. Außer Vasen bemalte er auch Schalen mit roten Figuren. — — Athenian Cup with Red Figures Attributed to Douris The photo shows an arched section of a painting on a cup. Several figures are painted in orange on a black background. The scene depicts how the bacchantes tear apart Pentheus, the son of Echion and Agave. The bacchantes are followers of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus. On the cup, they appear as four female figures whose black hair is gathered at the nape of the neck. The black of the hair is delineated from the black background by a fine light outline. One of the women wears a headscarf, while the other three women each have a narrow band around the head. All are wrapped in long tunic-like robes. Thin black lines mark patterns in the fabric. The bacchante on the far left wears a simple outer garment and himation over it. Her left shoulder and arm are not covered. She holds a knife in her right hand. The woman to her right clasps a himation with both hands at waist level in front of her stomach. Her gaze is fixed on the remaining two bacchantes, who are holding Pentheus' torso with his head between them. Hanging from the opening of his torn torso are thin hair-like threads which might convey the spillage of visceral blood. The women have each gripped his arms stretched out to the side with one hand, and with their free hand, they both grasp his curly black hair. The women wear hip-length cloaks over their undergarments. In the section to the right, a kneeling naked male figure with a full beard stands out, raising both hands in a defensive manner. This scene appears on several vessels from Athens. The cup shown here is considered the best preserved piece. It is attributed to the Greek vase painter Douris, who worked in Athens at the end of the 6th and in the 5th century BC. In addition to vases, he also painted bowls with red figures.

Kotsanas‘ hölzerne Reproduktion des Stomachion, eine moderne Reproduktion von Archimedes‘ Stomachion — Das Spiel besteht aus einer quadratischen Platte aus hellem Holz und 14 Holzteilen. Dabei handelt es sich um geometrische Formen, meist Dreiecke. Die flachen Holzteile sind auf der Platte so aneinandergelegt, dass sie ein Quadrat bilden. Je sieben Formen sind wie bei einem Puzzle so zusammengefügt, dass sie zwei waagrechte Rechtecke ergeben. Gleichzeitig ergeben jeweils sieben Formen zwei gleichschenklige Dreiecke, deren lange Seiten eine Diagonale von links unten nach rechts oben in dem Quadrat bilden. Die 14 Holzteile umfassen 11 Dreiecke, 2 Vierecke und ein Fünfeck. Die Dreiecke haben verschiedene Formen, bis auf zwei, die gleich in Form und Fläche sind. Die Vierecke und das Fünfeck haben unterschiedlich lange Seiten. Ein Viereck erinnert an die Form eines Papierdrachens, das Fünfeck an die Giebelseite eines Hauses. Alle Teile bestehen aus gemasertem hellem Holz. Gelegentlich reicht die Maserung in angrenzende Bereiche der geometrischen Formen hinein. —— Kotsanas' wooden reproduction of the Stomachion, a modern reproduction of Archimedes' Stomachion — The game consists of a square board made of light-coloured wood and 14 wooden pieces. These pieces are geometric shapes, mostly triangles. The flat wooden pieces are placed together on the board so that they form a square. Seven shapes are placed together, like in a puzzle, so that they form two horizontal rectangles. At the same time, seven shapes each make two isosceles triangles. The long sides of these triangles form a diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right of the square. The 14 wooden pieces comprise of 11 triangles, 2 squares and a pentagon. The triangles have different shapes, except for two that are the same in shape and area. The quadrilaterals and the pentagon have sides of different lengths. One square is reminiscent of the shape of a paper kite. The pentagon is reminiscent of the gable end of a house. All parts are made of light-coloured wood with a grained texture. Occasionally, the grain extends into adjacent areas of the geometric shapes.

Darstellung einer Frau (f. 15v) mit der Lage von Blutgefäßen und inneren Organen Dieses Blatt ist Teil einer Handschrift, die in der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts im Iran entstand. Sie war das erste originale anatomische Werk aus einem islamischen Land. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Darstellung eines weiblichen Körpers, die in der europäischen Ausgabe der Fünfbilderserie fehlt. Die Zeichnung der weiblichen Figur füllt nahezu den gesamten Bildraum. Dass es sich um die Darstellung einer Frau handelt ist lediglich daran zu erkennen, dass eine Gebärmutter mit Fötus eingezeichnet ist. Einen weiteren Hinweis darauf geben die sehr langen schwarzen Haare, die bis über die Hüfte reichen. Ihre Struktur ähnelt der der Blutgefäße, die als dünne rote Linien wie ein Netz alle sichtbaren Körperteile bedecken. Die füllige Frauengestalt steht breitbeinig mit gebeugten Knien, auf die ihre Hände gestützt sind. Der Oberkörper ist aufgerichtet. Im runden Gesicht sind die schmalen Augen in Schwarz gestaltet, der Mund in Rot. Im Torso sind unter anderem die Speiseröhre, das Herz und die Verdauungsorgane abgebildet. Oberhalb des ockergelben Darms liegt die hellrot abgesetzte Gebärmutter. Sie ist ringförmig dargestellt. In ihr ist in Weiß der Fötus erkennbar, dessen Arm um die angewinkelten Knie geschlungen ist. Seine Haare sind schwarz. Um den Fötus herum ist ebenfalls in Hellrot das Fruchtwasser dargestellt. Mansur ibn Ilyas war als Arzt im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert in Persien, dem heutigen Iran, tätig. Der Titel des Werkes, aus dem diese Illustration entnommen ist, könnte man etwa mit „Der Bau des menschlichen Körpers“ übersetzen. — — Depiction of a Woman (f. 15v) with the Location of Blood Vessels and Internal Organs This sheet is part of a manuscript produced in Iran in the middle of the 14th century. It was the first original anatomical work from an Islamic country. Of particular note is the depiction of a female body, which is missing from the European edition of the five-picture series. The drawing of the female figure fills almost the entire pictorial space. That it is a depiction of a woman can only be recognised by the fact that a uterus with a foetus is drawn in. Another clue is given by the very long black hair, which reaches down to the hips. The structure of the hair is similar to that of the blood vessels, which cover all visible parts of the body. The blood vessels are thin red lines reminiscent of a net. The plump female figure stands wide-legged with bent knees on which her hands are supported. The upper part of the body is erect. Her round face has narrow black eyes and a red mouth. In the torso, the oesophagus, the heart, and the digestive organs, among others, are depicted. Above the ochre-yellow intestine is the uterus in light red. It is depicted in the shape of a ring. In it, the foetus can be seen in white, its arm wrapped around the bent knees. Its hair is black. Around the foetus, the amniotic fluid is also depicted in light red. Mansur ibn Ilyas was active as a physician in the 14th and 15th centuries in Persia, today's Iran. The title of the work from which this illustration is taken could be roughly translated as “The Construction of the Human Body.”

——Das 3D-Modell des Verdauungssystems nach Aristoteles Das detailreiche 3D-Modell in Pastellfarben zwischen cremeweiß und hellrosa ist vor einem schwarzen Hintergrund positioniert. Licht scheint von rechts oben darauf zu fallen. Das 3D-Modell bildet einen unterschiedlich dicken Schlauch ab, der zu einem Knäuel verschlungen ist. Oben an diesem Knäuel befindet sich ein cremeweißes beutelartiges Gebilde mit einer glatten Oberfläche. Es ist der Magen. Aus ihm ragt ein Stück Speiseröhre empor. Es ist als dünner Schlauch gestaltet. Ein etwas dickerer cremefarbener Schlauch bildet am unteren Ende des Magens in engen Windungen und Krümmungen das Knäuel. Dies repräsentiert den Dünndarm, der in einen hellrosafarbenen Sack mündet. Der Sack erscheint wie in ein weitmaschiges Netz gepresst und geht in einen dickeren Schlauch über, der die gleiche Farbe und die gleiche netzartige Struktur an der Oberfläche besitzt. Dieser Schlauch stellt den Dickdarm dar. Er verläuft in rechten Winkeln, wie ein Rahmen, um das Dünndarmknäuel. Sein Ende weist senkrecht nach unten und verjüngt sich. Auf der 3D-Abbildung des Modells befindet sich das Zeichen für einen Play—Button. Light appears to fall on it from the upper right. The 3D model depicts a tube of varying thicknesses that is twisted into a ball. At the top of this ball is a creamy white pouch-like structure with a smooth surface. This represents the stomach. A piece of the oesophagus protrudes from it and is shaped like a thin tube. A slightly thicker cream-coloured tube forms the tangle at the lower end of the stomach in tight turns and bends. This represents the small intestine, which opens into a light pink sack. The sack appears as if pressed into a wide-meshed net and merges into a thicker tube that is the same colour and has the same net-like structure on the surface. This tube represents the large intestine. It runs at right angles, like a frame, around the small intestinal bundle. Its end points vertically downwards and tapers. On the image of the 3D model, there is a sign for a play button. This can be used to activate a short animation that rotates the 3D model once around an imaginary longitudinal axis.

Rotfiguriger Terrakotta-Glockenkrater — Das Foto zeigt einen Ausschnitt eines oben offene glockenförmige Weinmisch-Gefäß aus Ton, der hat einen runden Fuß. Auf seinem schwarzen Korpus sind rötlich leuchtende Figuren dargestellt. Das Gefäß ist 32 Zentimeter hoch. Der bauchige Korpus steht auf dem kräftigen flachen Fuß. Er weitet sich nach oben und endet in einem auskragenden Rand. Sein Durchmesser beträgt 33 Zentimeter. Unterhalb der Auskragung sind zwei horizontale Henkel angebracht. Zwischen den Henkeln sind die Figuren platziert. Sie werden ober- und unterhalb der Szene von Ornamentbändern eingerahmt. Den Mittelpunkt der Szene bildet ein niedriger Altar. Er reicht bis zu den Knien der Figuren, die um ihn gruppiert sind. Auf dem Altar sind Holzscheite säuberlich aufgeschichtet. An den Scheiten verlaufen kurze weiße Striche schräg nach rechts oben. Sie könnten ein Feuer oder Bratengeruch andeuten. Hinter dem Altar befindet sich ein schlanker Baum mit wenigen länglichen Blättern. Um den Altar stehen drei barfüßige Männer, einer links und zwei rechts. Der Mann links ist mit einem locker um die Hüften geschlungenen Tuch bekleidet. Auf seinem dunklen lockigen Haar trägt er, wie die anderen Männer auch, einen Kranz. In der linken Hand hält er einen Stab, mit der rechten weist er zum Altar. Ihm gegenüber, rechts neben dem Altar, steht ein Mann mit einer Schale in den Händen. Auf der Schale liegt etwas Weißes. Auch er trägt ein lockeres Gewand um die Hüften. Rechts neben diesem Mann befindet sich ein weiterer. Dieser trägt ein fließendes Gewand, das bis zu den Knöcheln reicht und eine Schulter bedeckt. Zwei unbekleidete, ebenfalls barfüßige Männer mit Kränzen im Haar flankieren die drei. Sie tragen lange Spieße, um deren obere Enden vermutlich Eingeweide geschlungen sind. Diese Vase stammt aus dem späten 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Sie ist im Besitz des Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. —— Red-figure Terracotta Bell Krater — The open-topped, bell-shaped terracotta vessel with handles, is a wine-mixing vessel that has a round foot and is 32 centimetres high. The round-bodied vessel rests on a thick and flat base. It widens towards the top and ends in a projecting rim. Its diameter is 33 centimetres. Below the rim are two horizontal handles. On the black surface of the vessel, there is a scene with vibrant reddish figures depicted. The figures are placed between the handles. They are framed above and below the scene by ornamental bands. A low altar forms the centre of the scene. It reaches the knees of the figures grouped around it. Logs are neatly piled up on the altar. On the logs, short white lines run diagonally upwards to the right. They could convey a fire or the smell of roasting. Behind the altar is a slender tree with a few elongated leaves. Around the altar are three barefoot men, one on the left and two on the right. All three wear wreathes in their dark curly hair. The man on the left is dressed in a shawl loosely wrapped around his hips. In his left hand, he holds a staff and with his right, he points to the altar. Opposite him, to the right of the altar, stands a man with a bowl in his hands. On the bowl is something white. He too wears a loose robe around his hips. To the right of this second man is another. This one wears a flowing robe that reaches down to his ankles and covers one shoulder. Additionally, flanking the three men are two unclothed men who are also barefoot with wreaths in their hair. They carry long skewers, around the upper ends of which are probably entrails. This vase dates from the late 5th century B.C. It is in the possession of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.
