Darstellung einer Frau (f. 15v) mit der Lage von Blutgefäßen und inneren Organen Dieses Blatt ist Teil einer Handschrift, die in der Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts im Iran entstand. Sie war das erste originale anatomische Werk aus einem islamischen Land. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die Darstellung eines weiblichen Körpers, die in der europäischen Ausgabe der Fünfbilderserie fehlt. Die Zeichnung der weiblichen Figur füllt nahezu den gesamten Bildraum. Dass es sich um die Darstellung einer Frau handelt ist lediglich daran zu erkennen, dass eine Gebärmutter mit Fötus eingezeichnet ist. Einen weiteren Hinweis darauf geben die sehr langen schwarzen Haare, die bis über die Hüfte reichen. Ihre Struktur ähnelt der der Blutgefäße, die als dünne rote Linien wie ein Netz alle sichtbaren Körperteile bedecken. Die füllige Frauengestalt steht breitbeinig mit gebeugten Knien, auf die ihre Hände gestützt sind. Der Oberkörper ist aufgerichtet. Im runden Gesicht sind die schmalen Augen in Schwarz gestaltet, der Mund in Rot. Im Torso sind unter anderem die Speiseröhre, das Herz und die Verdauungsorgane abgebildet. Oberhalb des ockergelben Darms liegt die hellrot abgesetzte Gebärmutter. Sie ist ringförmig dargestellt. In ihr ist in Weiß der Fötus erkennbar, dessen Arm um die angewinkelten Knie geschlungen ist. Seine Haare sind schwarz. Um den Fötus herum ist ebenfalls in Hellrot das Fruchtwasser dargestellt. Mansur ibn Ilyas war als Arzt im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert in Persien, dem heutigen Iran, tätig. Der Titel des Werkes, aus dem diese Illustration entnommen ist, könnte man etwa mit „Der Bau des menschlichen Körpers“ übersetzen. — — Depiction of a Woman (f. 15v) with the Location of Blood Vessels and Internal Organs This sheet is part of a manuscript produced in Iran in the middle of the 14th century. It was the first original anatomical work from an Islamic country. Of particular note is the depiction of a female body, which is missing from the European edition of the five-picture series. The drawing of the female figure fills almost the entire pictorial space. That it is a depiction of a woman can only be recognised by the fact that a uterus with a foetus is drawn in. Another clue is given by the very long black hair, which reaches down to the hips. The structure of the hair is similar to that of the blood vessels, which cover all visible parts of the body. The blood vessels are thin red lines reminiscent of a net. The plump female figure stands wide-legged with bent knees on which her hands are supported. The upper part of the body is erect. Her round face has narrow black eyes and a red mouth. In the torso, the oesophagus, the heart, and the digestive organs, among others, are depicted. Above the ochre-yellow intestine is the uterus in light red. It is depicted in the shape of a ring. In it, the foetus can be seen in white, its arm wrapped around the bent knees. Its hair is black. Around the foetus, the amniotic fluid is also depicted in light red. Mansur ibn Ilyas was active as a physician in the 14th and 15th centuries in Persia, today's Iran. The title of the work from which this illustration is taken could be roughly translated as “The Construction of the Human Body.”

Kotsanas‘ hölzerne Reproduktion des Stomachion, eine moderne Reproduktion von Archimedes‘ Stomachion — Das Spiel besteht aus einer quadratischen Platte aus hellem Holz und 14 Holzteilen. Dabei handelt es sich um geometrische Formen, meist Dreiecke. Die flachen Holzteile sind auf der Platte so aneinandergelegt, dass sie ein Quadrat bilden. Je sieben Formen sind wie bei einem Puzzle so zusammengefügt, dass sie zwei waagrechte Rechtecke ergeben. Gleichzeitig ergeben jeweils sieben Formen zwei gleichschenklige Dreiecke, deren lange Seiten eine Diagonale von links unten nach rechts oben in dem Quadrat bilden. Die 14 Holzteile umfassen 11 Dreiecke, 2 Vierecke und ein Fünfeck. Die Dreiecke haben verschiedene Formen, bis auf zwei, die gleich in Form und Fläche sind. Die Vierecke und das Fünfeck haben unterschiedlich lange Seiten. Ein Viereck erinnert an die Form eines Papierdrachens, das Fünfeck an die Giebelseite eines Hauses. Alle Teile bestehen aus gemasertem hellem Holz. Gelegentlich reicht die Maserung in angrenzende Bereiche der geometrischen Formen hinein. —— Kotsanas' wooden reproduction of the Stomachion, a modern reproduction of Archimedes' Stomachion — The game consists of a square board made of light-coloured wood and 14 wooden pieces. These pieces are geometric shapes, mostly triangles. The flat wooden pieces are placed together on the board so that they form a square. Seven shapes are placed together, like in a puzzle, so that they form two horizontal rectangles. At the same time, seven shapes each make two isosceles triangles. The long sides of these triangles form a diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right of the square. The 14 wooden pieces comprise of 11 triangles, 2 squares and a pentagon. The triangles have different shapes, except for two that are the same in shape and area. The quadrilaterals and the pentagon have sides of different lengths. One square is reminiscent of the shape of a paper kite. The pentagon is reminiscent of the gable end of a house. All parts are made of light-coloured wood with a grained texture. Occasionally, the grain extends into adjacent areas of the geometric shapes.

Illustration zu De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (John Arderne zugeschrieben) Die Buchseite zeigt die farbige Abbildung eines männlichen Körpers in Vorderansicht. Er ist von einem lateinischen Text ergänzt, der die Seite links und rechts vom Körper vollständig füllt. Die Körperdarstellung erstreckt sich über nahezu die gesamte Höhe der Buchseite. Oberhalb des Kopfes und unterhalb der Füße ist jeweils ein schmaler Rand. Kopf und Hals sind im Querschnitt abgebildet und erscheinen doppelt, wie bei einem aufgeklappten Scherenschnitt, dessen Falz am Hinterkopf verläuft. Das obere Drittel beider Kopfdarstellungen nimmt das in Weiß halbkreisförmig abgebildete Gehirn ein. Darunter ziehen sich bis in den Halsbereich netzartig dünne rote Linien. In beiden Hälsen ist eine Halswirbelsäule erkennbar. Beide Wirbelsäulen vereinigen sich auf Schulterhöhe. Sie erinnern an Schläuche. Mit roten Querstrichen ist die Abtrennung der einzelnen Wirbel markiert. Im Kinnbereich setzen mit einem dunkleren Rot, ebenfalls schlauchartig dargestellt, die Speiseröhren an, die v-förmig aufeinander zustreben, um sich nahe des Herzens im geöffneten Torso zu verbinden. Die Arme sind angewinkelt, die Ellenbogen weisen zu den Seiten. Die Hände scheinen unter die Rippen zu greifen, um den Brustkorb offen zu halten. Darin liegt das in Rottönen dargestellte Herz. Es nimmt fast den gesamten Raum oberhalb des Zwerchfells ein. Unterhalb liegen der länglich dargestellte Magen und der in Wellenformen abgebildete Darm. Zwei Schnittkanten verlaufen vertikal von oben bis zu den Genitalien über den Torso. Sie sind in einem kräftigen Rot gehalten. Entlang der Schnittkanten sind immer wieder kurze, im gleichen Rotton ausgeführte Striche sichtbar. Das Rot erinnert an Blut. Die Füße stehen schräg, hüftbreit auseinander. Wie die Arme sind die Beine als weiße Flächen mit dunkler Umrandung abgebildet. Im schwarz geschriebenen Text sind einzelne Worte und Sätze in Rot ausgeführt. Auffällig sind sechs größere Symbole, die unregelmäßig darin auftauchen. Sie sind in Blau gehalten. Eines erinnert an ein auf der Seite liegendes groß geschriebenes H. Der Titel der Handschrift aus dem 15. Jahrhundert ließe sich frei mit „Die Kunst des Körpers und der Chirurgie“ übersetzen. Sie lässt sich auf den englischen Chirurgen John Arderne zurückführen, der im 14. Jahrhundert praktizierte. — — Illustration to De Arte Physicali et de Cirurgia (attributed to John Arderne) The book page shows a coloured illustration of a male body in front view. It is complemented by a Latin text that completely fills the page to the left and right of the body. The depiction of the body extends over almost the entire height of the book page. There is a narrow margin above the head and below the feet. The head and neck are depicted in cross-section and appear double, like an unfolded silhouette whose fold runs along the back of the head. The upper third part of both head depictions is taken up by the brain, which is depicted by a white semi-circular shape. Below it, thin red lines extend into the neck area like a net. A cervical spine is visible in both necks. Both spines join at shoulder level and resemble tubes. The separation of the individual vertebrae is marked with red horizontal lines. In the area near the chins, the oesophagi are also depicted as tubes. They are dark red and move towards each other in a V-shape to join near the heart in the open torso. The arms are bent, and the elbows point to the sides. The hands seem to reach under the ribs to hold the chest open. The heart lies within and is depicted in shades of red. It occupies almost the entire space above the diaphragm. Below the heart is an elongated stomach and the intestines are depicted in wavy forms. Across the torso, a bold red outline runs vertically from the top, near the neck, to the genitals, resembling cut edges. Repetitive short strokes in the same shade of red are visible along the cut edges. The red is reminiscent of blood. The feet are at an angle and hip-width apart. Similar to the arms, the legs are depicted as white areas with a dark border. Within the written black text, individual words and sentences are depicted in red. Most noticeable are six larger symbols that appear irregularly throughout the text. They are blue coloured. One of them is reminiscent of a capital H lying on the page. The title of the 15th-century manuscript could be freely translated as "The Art of the Body and Surgery". It can be traced back to the English surgeon John Arderne, who practised in the 14th century.
