Die geometrische Darstellung des Stomachion-Diagramms — Das quadratische Blatt ist in geometrische Figuren, meist Dreiecke, unterteilt. Das Blatt ist mit einem 12x12 Gitternetz versehen, das mit feinen schwarzen gestrichelten Linien ausgeführt ist. Das Gitternetz besteht also aus 144 Quadraten. Vor diesen Hintergrund bilden durchgehende, breitere und schwarze Linien die geometrischen Figuren. Vier Linien durchschneiden die gesamte Fläche des quadratischen Blatts. Eine vertikale Senkrechte halbiert es in zwei Rechtecke. Diese wiederum werden durch Diagonalen in je zwei rechtwinklige Dreiecke geteilt. Im Rechteck links verläuft die Diagonale von links unten nach rechts oben, im Rechteck rechts von rechts unten nach links oben. Eine weitere Linie verläuft diagonal von links oben nach rechts unten über das quadratische Blatt. Sie schneidet die Diagonale im linken Rechteck und die vertikale Senkrechte. Außerdem teilt sie das Quadrat in zwei gleichschenklige Dreiecke. Die rechten Winkel dieser Dreiecke befinden sich links unten und rechts oben. Kürzere Linien unterteilen die so entstandenen Dreiecke in weitere unregelmäßige Dreiecke, zwei unregelmäßige Vierecke und ein unregelmäßiges Fünfeck. Sowohl in den beiden Rechtecken als auch in den beiden gleichschenkligen Dreiecken befinden sich sieben geometrische Figuren. —— The geometric representation of the Stomachion diagram — The square sheet is divided into geometric figures, mostly triangles. The sheet has a 12x12 grid with fine black dotted lines. The grid thus consists of 144 squares. Overlaid on this grid background, there are continuous, broader, and black lines that form the geometric figures. Four lines cut through the entire surface of the square sheet. A vertical perpendicular line divides it into two rectangles. These, in turn, are divided by diagonal lines into two right-angled triangles each. In the rectangle on the left, the diagonal runs from the bottom left to the top right. In the rectangle on the right, the diagonal runs from the bottom right to the top left. Der Stein ist 80 Zentimeter hoch, an der dicksten Stelle zirka 9 Zentimeter dick und 56 Zentimeter breit. Das Halbrelief ist nach oben durch einen Vorsprung und nach unten durch eine Stufe im Stein abgegrenzt. Das untere Viertel bedecken griechische Buchstaben in waagerecht verlaufenden Zeilen. Die beiden Figuren sind mittig auf der glatten Oberfläche platziert. Der Arzt links sitzt auf einem Hocker mit viereckiger Sitzfläche. Sein Gewand fällt in lockeren Falten bis auf die Knöchel. Sein Gesichtszüge sind nicht deutlich erkennbar. Das Gesicht des Mediziners ist dem Patienten zugewandt. Sein rechter Arm ist ausgestreckt, die Hand liegt auf dem etwas gewölbten Bauch des Jungen. Der steht aufrecht mit herabhängenden Armen. Einige Rippen zeichnen sich ab. Der Blick ist auf den Arzt gerichtet. Im Gesicht des Patienten sind Augen, Nase und Mund deutlich herausgearbeitet. Unter den kurzen Haaren treten die Ohren hervor. Rechts neben dem Jungen steht ein bauchiges Gefäß mit kuppelartigem Deckel. Es reicht ihm bis über das Knie. Es scheint auf einem runden Fuß zu stehen. Ein Henkel verläuft über der Kuppelspitze. Der Grabstein ist dem griechischen Arzt Jason gewidmet, der im 2. Jahrhundert nach Christus praktizierte. — — Marble Tombstone of a Greek Doctor The upright grey tombstone depicts a seated man with a naked boy standing next to him. The stone is 80 centimetres high, about 9 centimetres thick at its thickest point, and 56 centimetres wide. The half-relief is delimited at the top by an edge and at the bottom by a step in the stone. The lower quarter is covered by Greek letters in horizontal lines. The two figures are placed centrally on a smooth surface. The doctor on the left sits on a stool with a square seat. His robe falls in loose folds to his ankles. His facial features are not clearly visible. The doctor's face is turned towards the patient. His right arm is outstretched, his hand rests on the boy's somewhat bulging belly. The boy is standing upright with his arms hanging down. A few ribs are visible. His gaze is directed towards the doctor. In the patient's face, the eyes, nose, and mouth are clearly outlined. The ears protrude from under the short hair. To the right of the boy is a bulbous vessel with a dome-like lid. It reaches above the boy's knee. It seems to stand on a round foot. A handle runs over the top of the dome. The tombstone is dedicated to the Greek physician Jason, who practised in the 2nd century AD.

Kotsanas‘ hölzerne Reproduktion des Stomachion, eine moderne Reproduktion von Archimedes‘ Stomachion — Das Spiel besteht aus einer quadratischen Platte aus hellem Holz und 14 Holzteilen. Dabei handelt es sich um geometrische Formen, meist Dreiecke. Die flachen Holzteile sind auf der Platte so aneinandergelegt, dass sie ein Quadrat bilden. Je sieben Formen sind wie bei einem Puzzle so zusammengefügt, dass sie zwei waagrechte Rechtecke ergeben. Gleichzeitig ergeben jeweils sieben Formen zwei gleichschenklige Dreiecke, deren lange Seiten eine Diagonale von links unten nach rechts oben in dem Quadrat bilden. Die 14 Holzteile umfassen 11 Dreiecke, 2 Vierecke und ein Fünfeck. Die Dreiecke haben verschiedene Formen, bis auf zwei, die gleich in Form und Fläche sind. Die Vierecke und das Fünfeck haben unterschiedlich lange Seiten. Ein Viereck erinnert an die Form eines Papierdrachens, das Fünfeck an die Giebelseite eines Hauses. Alle Teile bestehen aus gemasertem hellem Holz. Gelegentlich reicht die Maserung in angrenzende Bereiche der geometrischen Formen hinein. —— Kotsanas' wooden reproduction of the Stomachion, a modern reproduction of Archimedes' Stomachion — The game consists of a square board made of light-coloured wood and 14 wooden pieces. These pieces are geometric shapes, mostly triangles. The flat wooden pieces are placed together on the board so that they form a square. Seven shapes are placed together, like in a puzzle, so that they form two horizontal rectangles. At the same time, seven shapes each make two isosceles triangles. The long sides of these triangles form a diagonal line from the bottom left to the top right of the square. The 14 wooden pieces comprise of 11 triangles, 2 squares and a pentagon. The triangles have different shapes, except for two that are the same in shape and area. The quadrilaterals and the pentagon have sides of different lengths. One square is reminiscent of the shape of a paper kite. The pentagon is reminiscent of the gable end of a house. All parts are made of light-coloured wood with a grained texture. Occasionally, the grain extends into adjacent areas of the geometric shapes.

——Das 3D-Modell des Verdauungssystems nach Aristoteles Das detailreiche 3D-Modell in Pastellfarben zwischen cremeweiß und hellrosa ist vor einem schwarzen Hintergrund positioniert. Licht scheint von rechts oben darauf zu fallen. Das 3D-Modell bildet einen unterschiedlich dicken Schlauch ab, der zu einem Knäuel verschlungen ist. Oben an diesem Knäuel befindet sich ein cremeweißes beutelartiges Gebilde mit einer glatten Oberfläche. Es ist der Magen. Aus ihm ragt ein Stück Speiseröhre empor. Es ist als dünner Schlauch gestaltet. Ein etwas dickerer cremefarbener Schlauch bildet am unteren Ende des Magens in engen Windungen und Krümmungen das Knäuel. Dies repräsentiert den Dünndarm, der in einen hellrosafarbenen Sack mündet. Der Sack erscheint wie in ein weitmaschiges Netz gepresst und geht in einen dickeren Schlauch über, der die gleiche Farbe und die gleiche netzartige Struktur an der Oberfläche besitzt. Dieser Schlauch stellt den Dickdarm dar. Er verläuft in rechten Winkeln, wie ein Rahmen, um das Dünndarmknäuel. Sein Ende weist senkrecht nach unten und verjüngt sich. Light appears to fall on it from the upper right. The 3D model depicts a tube of varying thicknesses that is twisted into a ball. At the top of this ball is a creamy white pouch-like structure with a smooth surface. This represents the stomach. A piece of the oesophagus protrudes from it and is shaped like a thin tube. A slightly thicker cream-coloured tube forms the tangle at the lower end of the stomach in tight turns and bends. This represents the small intestine, which opens into a light pink sack. The sack appears as if pressed into a wide-meshed net and merges into a thicker tube that is the same colour and has the same net-like structure on the surface. This tube represents the large intestine. It runs at right angles, like a frame, around the small intestinal bundle. Its end points vertically downwards and tapers. On the image of the 3D model, there is a sign for a play button. This can be used to activate a short animation that rotates the 3D model once around an imaginary longitudinal axis.

In Orange sind mehrere Figuren auf schwarzem Grund aufgebracht. Die Szene beschreibt wie die Bacchantinnen Pentheus, den Sohn von Echion und Agaue, zerreißen. Als Bacchantinnen bezeichnet man Anhängerinnen des römischen Weingottes Bacchus. Auf dem Becher erscheinen sie als vier Frauengestalten, deren schwarze Haare im Nacken zusammengefasst sind. Das Schwarz der Haare wird durch einen feinen hellen Umriss vom schwarzen Untergrund abgegrenzt. Eine der Frauen trägt ein Kopftuch, die anderen drei je ein schmales Band um den Kopf. Alle sind in lange tunikaartige Gewänder gehüllt. Schwarze dünne Striche markieren Muster im Stoff. Die Bacchantin ganz links trägt ein einfaches Obergewand, Himation, darüber. Ihre linke Schulter und der linke Arm sind nicht bedeckt. In der rechten Hand hält sie ein Messer. Die Frau rechts neben ihr umfasst ein Hemation mit beiden Händen auf Taillenhöhe vor dem Bauch. Ihr Blick ist auf die übrigen beiden Bacchantinnen gerichtet, die Pentheus' Oberkörper mit seinem Kopf zwischen sich halten. Von der Öffnung seines zerrissenen Oberkörpers hängen dünne haarähnliche Fäden herab, die das Verschütten von viszeralem Blut andeuten könnten. Die Frauen haben die seitlich ausgestreckten Arme mit jeweils einer Hand gepackt, mit der freien Hand greifen sie beide in sein lockiges schwarzes Haar. Die Frauen tragen hüftlange Umhänge über ihren Untergewändern. Im rechten Abschnitt zeichnet sich eine kniende nackte Männergestalt mit Vollbart ab, die abwehrend beide Hände hebt. Die Szene erscheint auf mehreren Gefäßen aus Athen. Der hier gezeigte Becher gilt als das am besten erhaltene Stück. Er wird dem griechischen Vasenmaler Douris zugeschrieben, der am Ende des 6. und im 5. Jahrhundert vor Christus in Athen arbeitete. Außer Vasen bemalte er auch Schalen mit roten Figuren. — — Athenian Cup with Red Figures Attributed to Douris The photo shows an arched section of a painting on a cup. Several figures are painted in orange on a black background. The scene depicts how the bacchantes tear apart Pentheus, the son of Echion and Agave. The bacchantes are followers of the Roman god of wine, Bacchus. On the cup, they appear as four female figures whose black hair is gathered at the nape of the neck. The black of the hair is delineated from the black background by a fine light outline. One of the women wears a headscarf, while the other three women each have a narrow band around the head. All are wrapped in long tunic-like robes. Thin black lines mark patterns in the fabric. The bacchante on the far left wears a simple outer garment and himation over it. Her left shoulder and arm are not covered. She holds a knife in her right hand. The woman to her right clasps a himation with both hands at waist level in front of her stomach. Her gaze is fixed on the remaining two bacchantes, who are holding Pentheus' torso with his head between them. Hanging from the opening of his torn torso are thin hair-like threads which might convey the spillage of visceral blood. The women have each gripped his arms stretched out to the side with one hand, and with their free hand, they both grasp his curly black hair. The women wear hip-length cloaks over their undergarments. In the section to the right, a kneeling naked male figure with a full beard stands out, raising both hands in a defensive manner. This scene appears on several vessels from Athens. The cup shown here is considered the best preserved piece. It is attributed to the Greek vase painter Douris, who worked in Athens at the end of the 6th and in the 5th century BC. In addition to vases, he also painted bowls with red figures.

Das Werk des Aristoteles/ Von der Beobachtung zum Text Die Montage im Hochformat zeigt einen Haken aus Metall, eine szenische Darstellung einer Tieropferhandlung und den Teil eines Manuskripts. Im Vordergrund befindet sich der Haken. Er hat einen flachen eckigen Schaft, der sich zur Spitze hin verjüngt. An seinem vorderen Ende ist das Metall in einem rechten Winkel nach oben gebogen. Etwa ab der Krümmung wird der Schaft rund. Die raue Oberfläche weist eine grüngraue und braune Färbung auf. Die Spitze des Hakens ragt von unten in die Darstellung der Opferhandlung. In der Szene kniet ein muskulöser junger Mann mit nacktem Oberkörper hinter einem auf dem Rücken liegenden Rind. Mit einem Haken hat er Eingeweide aus dem Tierkörper gezogen. Sie sind als beutelförmige Gebilde auf der Bauchdecke des Tieres liegend dargestellt. Hinter dem Mann stehen sieben weitere Männer. Alle haben kurz gelockte Haare, einige Bart. Einer mit nacktem Oberkörper trägt eine Axt über seiner Schulter und eine Kanne in der Hand. Neben ihm hält einer in langem fließendem Gewand einen Stock. Der junge Mann und das Rind sind in hellen Grautönen dargestellt, die Männer hinter ihm in dunklem Grau. Im oberen Drittel der Montage, über den Köpfen der Männer, befindet sich der Teil aus dem Manuskript. Unter einer Überschrift in roten griechischen Großbuchstaben folgen Zeilen in schwarzen Kleinbuchstaben. Die Abstände zwischen den Wörtern und Zeilen sind sehr gering. Nach unten und rechts außen verblasst der Text. Am linken Rand neben dem Fließtext und der Überschrift ist ein Ornament in Rot angebracht, das an eine Initiale erinnert. Dieses Objekt steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem 3D-Modell des Verdauungssystems nach Aristoteles. — — The Work of Aristotle/ From Observation to Text The montage in portrait format shows a metal hook, a scenic representation of an animal sacrifice, and part of a manuscript. The hook is in the foreground. It has a flat angular shaft that tapers towards the tip. At its front end, the metal is bent upwards at a right angle. At about the bend, the shaft becomes round. The rough surface has a green-grey and brown colouring. The tip of the hook protrudes from below in the depiction of the sacrificial act. In the scene, a muscular young man with a naked torso kneels behind a cow lying on its back. He has pulled the intestines out of the animal's body with a hook. They are depicted as pouch-like formations lying on the animal's abdominal wall. Seven other men are standing behind the young man. All have short curly hair, some are bearded. One with a bare torso carries an axe over his shoulder and a jug in his hand. Next to him, a man in long flowing robes holds a stick. The young man and the cow are depicted in light shades of grey, the men behind them in dark grey. In the upper third of the montage, above the heads of the men, is the part from the manuscript. Under a heading in red Greek capitals follow lines in black lowercase. The spacing between the words and lines is very small. The text fades towards the bottom and the far right. On the left margin next to the continuous text and the heading, is an ornament in red, reminiscent of an initial. This object is closely related to the 3D model of “Aristotle's Digestive System.”

Von Euphronios signierter athenischer Krater mit roten Figuren Das Terrakottagefäß mit Henkeln stammt aus einem etruskischen Grab des 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Der Ausschnitt zeigt eine Szene aus Homers Ilias, in der Zeus‘ Sohn Sarpedon von Patroklos getötet wurde. Ein Krater ist ein griechisches Weinmischgefäß in Form eines Topfes, der sich nach oben hin verbreitert. Der obere und untere Rand des hier gezeigten Kraters ist mit einem orangefarbenen Schnörkelmuster verziert. Auch die Figuren darauf sind in Orange gehalten. Sie heben sich deutlich vom schwarzen Untergrund ab. In der Mitte der Szene ist Sarpedon auf der Seite liegend erkennbar. Sein Körper nimmt etwa die untere Hälfte der Darstellung ein. Seine Beine sind leicht angewinkelt, der rechte Arm liegt vor dem Körper. Die in Braun aufgemalten welligen Haare fallen ihm auf die Schultern. Der athletische Körper ist unbekleidet. Dünne rote Linien verlaufen vom Herzbereich schräg nach links unten, ebenso von Bauch und rechtem Oberschenkel. Sarpedon wird an Knien und Schultern von zwei menschlichen Gestalten mit Adlerflügeln und Adlerköpfen gehalten. Sie tragen kurze Tuniken. Die schwarzen Vollbärte stehen waagerecht vom Kinn ab. Die Gestalten sind die Personifizierungen von Schlaf und Tod. Mittig hinter Sarpedon steht eine weitere Figur aufrecht nach links gewandt.Es ist Hermes. Seine rechte Hand ist erhoben, in der linken hält er den Stab. Auf dem Kopf sitzt der geflügelte Helm. Darunter quellen gewellte schwarze Haare hervor, die ihm bis auf die Schultern fallen. Er trägt einen Umhang über einem tunikaartigen Untergewand. Links und rechts wird die Szene von je einem Soldaten mit Speer und Schild eingerahmt. Diese Figuren sind in dem dargestellten Ausschnitt nur teilweise erkennbar. Dieser Krater von Euphronios hat ein Fassungsvermögen von 45 Litern. Euphronios war einer der bedeutendsten griechischen Vasenmaler des rotfigurigen Stils. Das Gefäß wird im Museo Nazionale Archeologico Cerite in der Nähe von Rom aufbewahrt. — — Athenian Krater Signed by Euphronios with Red Figures The photo shows a section of a terracotta vessel with handles. It comes from an Etruscan tomb of the 6th century BC. This section depicts a scene from Homer's Iliad in which Zeus' son, Sarpedon, was killed by Patroklos. A krater is a Greek wine-mixing vessel in the shape of a pot that widens towards the top. The upper and lower rims of the krater shown here are decorated with an orange scroll pattern. The figures on it are also in orange and clearly stand out against the black background. In the middle of the scene, Sarpedon can be seen lying on his side. His body takes up about the lower half of the depiction. His legs are slightly bent, and his right arm is in front of his body. The wavy hair, painted in brown, falls to his shoulders. His athletic body is unclothed. Thin red lines run diagonally from the heart area down to the left, as well as from the abdomen and right thigh. Sarpedon is held at the knees and shoulders by two human figures with eagle wings and eagle heads. They are wearing short tunics. Their full black beards stand out horizontally from the chin. They are the personifications of sleep and death. In the centre behind Sarpedon stands another figure standing upright and facing to the left. It is Hermes. His right hand is raised, and on his left, he holds a staff. A winged helmet sits on his head. Wavy black hair spills out from under it, falling to his shoulders. He wears a cloak over a tunic-like undergarment. On either side, the scene is framed by a soldier with a spear and shield. These figures are only partially visible in the photo shown. This krater signed by Euphronios has a capacity of 45 litres. Euphronios was one of the most important Greek vase painters of the red-figure style. This krater is located in the Cerite National Archeological Museum near Rome.
