John Sloan, Ein Selbstportrait des Künstlers mit einem Bariumbecher in der Hand, der sich unter der Aufsicht von zwei Radiologen einer Durchleuchtung des oberen Magen-Darm-Trakts unterzieht — Bei diesem hochformatigen Druck in Grautönen aus dem Jahr 1926 handelt es sich um ein mit Radierung und Aquatinta geschaffenes Selbstporträt. Im Zentrum der Druckgrafik befindet sich der rechteckige Leuchtschirm. Vor einem weißen Hintergrund zeichnen sich darauf in Grau Rippen, der sackförmige Magen und daran anschließende Darmschlingen ab. Hinter dem Schirm steht ein schlanker Mann in Pullunder und Hemd. Sein längliches Gesicht mit dem markanten Kinn erscheint in einem helleren Grau als der Körper und die etwas vom Kopf abstehenden kurzen Haare. Der Mann trägt eine runde Brille. In seiner rechten Hand hält er ein durchsichtiges, zylindrisches Gefäß, das zu einem Drittel mit einer Flüssigkeit (Barium) gefüllt ist, die ebenso hell strahlt wie der Leuchtschirm. Der Mann steht zwischen dem Leuchtschirm und der türgroßen rechteckigen Platte. Sie erscheint nahezu schwarz und ist stark schraffiert. An der Wand, links neben dem Mann, hängen zwei gerahmte Urkunden. Aus der dunklen Platte ragt eine Stange heraus. An ihr ist im rechten Winkel an einem kurzen Arm, der Leuchtschirm befestigt. Am Kopf der Stange befindet sich ein Rad. Vor dem Leuchtschirm sitzen zwei Männer. Beide tragen Kittel, Schutzbrillen und helle Handschuhe. Der Mann links hat zurückgekämmtes dunkles Haar. Sein Blick ist auf den Schirm gerichtet. Mit der rechten Hand deutet er darauf, mit der linken umfasst er das Rad. Der Mann rechts hat Geheimratsecken und ebenfalls zurückgekämmtes dunkles Haar. Mit erhobenem linkem Zeigefinger sieht er zu seinem Kollegen. Die Partien der Kittel, die vom Leuchtschirm beschienen werden, strahlen weiß. Die Rückenpartien und die den Betrachtenden zugewandten Gesichtspartien der Männer sind in dunklen Grauabstufungen ausgeführt und stark schraffiert. Die Grauabstufungen lassen sich mit dem Aquatinta- Verfahren erzeugen, die Schraffuren mit der Radierung. —— John Sloan, A self-portrait of the artist holding a cup of barium and undergoing an upper gastrointestinal fluoroscopic study under the care of two radiologists — This portrait format print in shades of grey from 1926 is a self-portrait created with etching and aquatint. In the centre of the print is the rectangular illuminated screen. Against a white background, ribs, a sack-shaped stomach and adjoining intestinal loops stand out in grey. Behind the illuminated screen stands a slim man in a sweater and shirt. His elongated face with the prominent chin appears in a lighter grey than his body and short hair sticks out a little from his head. The man wears oval glasses. In his right hand, he holds a transparent cylindrical vessel, one-third of which is filled with a liquid (barium) that shines as brightly as the illuminated screen. The man stands between the illuminated screen and a door-sized rectangular plate. It appears almost black and is heavily hatched. On the wall, to the left of the man, are two framed documents. A pole protrudes from the dark panel. A lampshade is attached to it at a right angle on a short arm. At the head of the pole is a wheel. Two men are sitting in front of the illuminated screen. Both are wearing smocks, protective goggles, and light-coloured gloves. The man on the left has dark hair combed back. His gaze is directed at the screen. He points to it with his right hand and grips the wheel with his left. The man on the right also has dark hair combed back. With his left index finger raised, he looks at his colleague. Some parts of their gowns that are illuminated by the fluorescent screen shine white. Some other parts of the men's backs and faces, facing away from the fluorescent screen, are in dark shades of grey and are heavily hatched. The shades of grey are created using an aquatint technique and the hatching with an etching technique.

Das Werk des Aristoteles/ Von der Beobachtung zum Text Die Montage im Hochformat zeigt einen Haken aus Metall, eine szenische Darstellung einer Tieropferhandlung und den Teil eines Manuskripts. Im Vordergrund befindet sich der Haken. Er hat einen flachen eckigen Schaft, der sich zur Spitze hin verjüngt. An seinem vorderen Ende ist das Metall in einem rechten Winkel nach oben gebogen. Etwa ab der Krümmung wird der Schaft rund. Die raue Oberfläche weist eine grüngraue und braune Färbung auf. Die Spitze des Hakens ragt von unten in die Darstellung der Opferhandlung. In der Szene kniet ein muskulöser junger Mann mit nacktem Oberkörper hinter einem auf dem Rücken liegenden Rind. Mit einem Haken hat er Eingeweide aus dem Tierkörper gezogen. Sie sind als beutelförmige Gebilde auf der Bauchdecke des Tieres liegend dargestellt. Hinter dem Mann stehen sieben weitere Männer. Alle haben kurz gelockte Haare, einige Bart. Einer mit nacktem Oberkörper trägt eine Axt über seiner Schulter und eine Kanne in der Hand. Neben ihm hält einer in langem fließendem Gewand einen Stock. Der junge Mann und das Rind sind in hellen Grautönen dargestellt, die Männer hinter ihm in dunklem Grau. Im oberen Drittel der Montage, über den Köpfen der Männer, befindet sich der Teil aus dem Manuskript. Unter einer Überschrift in roten griechischen Großbuchstaben folgen Zeilen in schwarzen Kleinbuchstaben. Die Abstände zwischen den Wörtern und Zeilen sind sehr gering. Nach unten und rechts außen verblasst der Text. Am linken Rand neben dem Fließtext und der Überschrift ist ein Ornament in Rot angebracht, das an eine Initiale erinnert. Dieses Objekt steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem 3D-Modell des Verdauungssystems nach Aristoteles. — — The Work of Aristotle/ From Observation to Text The montage in portrait format shows a metal hook, a scenic representation of an animal sacrifice, and part of a manuscript. The hook is in the foreground. It has a flat angular shaft that tapers towards the tip. At its front end, the metal is bent upwards at a right angle. At about the bend, the shaft becomes round. The rough surface has a green-grey and brown colouring. The tip of the hook protrudes from below in the depiction of the sacrificial act. In the scene, a muscular young man with a naked torso kneels behind a cow lying on its back. He has pulled the intestines out of the animal's body with a hook. They are depicted as pouch-like formations lying on the animal's abdominal wall. Seven other men are standing behind the young man. All have short curly hair, some are bearded. One with a bare torso carries an axe over his shoulder and a jug in his hand. Next to him, a man in long flowing robes holds a stick. The young man and the cow are depicted in light shades of grey, the men behind them in dark grey. In the upper third of the montage, above the heads of the men, is the part from the manuscript. Under a heading in red Greek capitals follow lines in black lowercase. The spacing between the words and lines is very small. The text fades towards the bottom and the far right. On the left margin next to the continuous text and the heading, is an ornament in red, reminiscent of an initial. This object is closely related to the 3D model of “Aristotle's Digestive System.”

Carcinoma colloides peritonei Die farbige Abbildung zeigt einen vertikalen Querschnitt der Bauchhöhle mit ihren Organen und der Wirbelsäule. Sie füllt die gesamte Seite aus. Auf dem schmalen Rand rechts oben steht in lateinischen Buchstaben Taf. 3. Am unteren Rand ist zentriert in blasser gedruckter Schrift der Titel der Zeichnung lesbar. Die Darstellung beginnt am oberen Seitenrand unterhalb des Brustkorbs und endet unten mit dem Po und männlichen Geschlechtsorganen. Rechts ist sie durch die Wirbelsäule begrenzt, links durch den stark vorgewölbten Bauch. Umgeben wird die Abbildung von einen beige-gelblichen Rand. Die Wirbelsäule schwingt im Lendenbereich etwas nach links. Die einzelnen Wirbel sind in einem hellem Gelb dargestellt, rote Pünktchen dicht nebeneinander markieren ihr Inneres. In Hellblau erscheinen die Räume dazwischen. Nach links folgt die Abbildung der Bauchhöhle mit ihren Organen. Sie sind mehrheitlich in einem blassen Rot gezeichnet. Blassgelbe Umrandungen konturieren sie nach außen. Alle Organe sind dazu mehr oder weniger von grauer Farbe umgeben. Sie erscheint wie ein Belag, dessen Struktur an Kaviar erinnert. Im oberen Drittel sticht eine ovale braune Fläche hervor, auf der unterschiedlich große dunkle Punkte erscheinen. Darunter, nah an der Wirbelsäule befindet sich eine längliche, vertikal verlaufende Farbfläche in Gelb, deren Enden sich verjüngen. Darin ist ein dunkelbraunes Oval abgebildet. Der Raum hinter der Wölbung der Bauchdecke links ist mit blasser grün-grauer Farbe ausgemalt. Diese Abbildung stammt aus dem Topographischen Atlas der Medizinisch-Chirurgischen Diagnostik, der vom Pathologen Emil Ponfick zwischen 1900 und 1905 zusammengestellt wurde. Unterstützt wurde er dabei von Dr. Emil Löschmann, einem Maler und Grafiker aus Breslau. — — Carcinoma colloides peritonei The coloured illustration shows a vertical cross-section of the abdominal cavity with its organs and spine. It fills the entire page. On the narrow margin in the upper right corner, “Taf. 3” is written in Latin letters. The title of the drawing can be read at the lower margin, centred in a pale printed script. The illustration begins at the top of the page below the ribcage and ends at the bottom with the buttocks and male sexual organs. On the right, it is limited by the spine, and on the left by the strongly bulging abdomen. The figure is surrounded by a beige-yellowish border. The spine swings slightly to the left in the lumbar region. The individual vertebrae are depicted in light yellow, red dots close together mark their interior. The spaces between them appear in light blue. To the left follows the illustration of the abdominal cavity with its organs. The majority of them are drawn in pale red. Pale yellow borders outline them on the outside. All organs are more or less surrounded by a grey colour. It appears like a coating whose structure is reminiscent of caviar. In the upper third, an oval brown area stands out, on which dark dots of different sizes appear. Below it, close to the spine, is an elongated vertically running coloured area in yellow, the ends of which taper off. A dark brown oval is depicted within it. The space behind the bulge of the abdominal wall on the left is painted in a paler green-grey colour. This illustration is from the "Topographical Atlas of Medico-Surgical Diagnostics," compiled by the pathologist Emil Ponfick between 1900 and 1905. He was assisted by Dr. Emil Löschmann, a painter and graphic artist from Breslau.
